Answer
It's nice to know I'm not the only one this song haunts. Like you I've played this verse over and over in my mind with no luck. Since the advent of the internet, I've googled hours and hours trying to find "Jonathan". Ironically I have found others who have been looking for this song.

My memory is deeper than yours however, I recall the song being played in 1982 around the same time as Petra's "For Annie" (it was released in 1981)on KOBC 90.7 in Joplin Missouri. I use to work at this station in 1997 and asked a fellow DJ if he recalled the song.He gave me the name and the group. Being 20 and dumb I did not write it down. I recall the song was taken from the book of Samuel the story of David and Jonathan, there was also a reference to running through the woods and hunting (I think). Anyway, I'm sorry I am of no help.

I truly believe this song was either a southern gospel song or a CCM (KOBC played both at this time), I also think it was possibly a one hit wonder on a compilation record since nobody can remember much about it. It was also sung by men or a man.

Here's a list of CCM groups from the 80's maybe it will jog someones memory. http://www.topchristianhits.org/top_christian_artists_1980s.html
