I believe the song title is "God is a surprise". The Chorus is: Surprise, surprise, God is a surprise. Right before your eyes, it's baffling to the wise. Surprise, surprise, God is a surprise, open up your eyes and see.

It's composer is Carey Landry and can be found in the "Hi God" series. Christian music for children. It should be available at Catholic bookstores.

I found this when I was searching for the same song.

For the Google search I entered, "Well, surprise, surprise, God is a surprise, right before your eyes"

It was a strange foreign name that the search pulled up but it had a PowerPoint page with the song on it. It was the only place I found it.

Hopefully you can still email the original questioner.

Here are the words it had.

Well, surprise, surprise,

God is a surprise, right before your eyes.

It’s baffling to the wise.

Surprise, surprise, God is a surprise.

Open up your eyes and see.

Moses tended sheep upon a mountaintop.

He hardly noticed when a burning bush said: “Stop!

Set my people free and take them to my land.

“That couldn’t be my God,” he said, “He’d have a better plan.”

Well, surprise, surprise,

God is a surprise, right before your eyes.

It’s baffling to the wise.

Surprise, surprise, God is a surprise.

Open up your eyes and see.

People of Israel were looking for a king.

If God could save that way, then freedom bells would ring.

Along came Jesus, a man who’s poor and weak.

“He couldn’t be our God,” they said. “He’s nothing but a fake.”

Well, surprise, surprise,

God is a surprise, right before your eyes.

It’s baffling to the wise.

Surprise, surprise, God is a surprise.

Open up your eyes and see.

Peter and the rest of that straggly little band,

they all ran away when darkness hit the land.

Whoever heard of a humble bungling boss.

“He couldn’t be our God,” they said. “He’s hanging on a cross.”

Seek our God in hope, moving as he goes

with justice, grace and love in anything that grows,

in anything at all he suddenly may be,

‘cause everything is his, you know, especially you and me.

Well, surprise, surprise,

God is a surprise, right before your eyes.

It’s baffling to the wise.

Surprise, surprise, God is a surprise.

Open up your eyes and see.

My Goodness, God is indeed a surprise!

Here I am writing a letter in which I mention the title of song while referring to its wisdom, and my 73 year old brain could not seem to find the file with all the lyrics and how happy I was to find this post on your page, made 6 years ago that was made to help another person on whom this song impacted.

We indeed are oblivious of all the ripples we make in this world, for good or ill, and I suppose that is one of the wonders we may behold when the veil is lifted.

I encounterd this song at the Kanuga Episcopal Conference Center in Hendersonville, NC around 1972-73, along with several fellow parishioners, attending a Christian Education Conference. Us Sunday School teachers sang this song on the return home trip, much as we sang as teenagers on bus trips and outings.  Thanks for your link to these words as well as so much more, and thank you God, for another Surprise!

I just suddenly started singing this song today while cleaning up.  I could not recall the words except part of the chorus.  The parsh I used to attend in Lubbock, Texas, played this song for the whole school mass once a week and then again on Sunday morning Children's Mass.  This song was part of the entire children's liturgy.  Father Carey Landry put together all the words, songs, responses and book for the celebrating priest to follow from th entrance song to the final song at the end of mass.  The entire mass was sooo beautiful and to see the children understand and participate was awesome.  One other song from that set started with the words "God Our Father looks with Love on us all the Time, all the time..".  Those are the only words I remember, but do remember the sound. It's a shame that so few parishes knew about this children's liturgy.

I can help you play or chart any song you want. If you`re having trouble with that ONE chord you just can`t figure out, then I`m your man. I play piano and do either lyrics with chords above it or lead sheets. I cannot do Guitar or Bass Tabs, but I have some great resources for those.

Experience

I have been leading worship bands for 20 years and have always either found the music I needed or transcribed it by ear.
