Christianity -- Christian Living/Churches Selling Merchandise

Question
My husband and I are looking for a Christian church to attend. There is one we have in mind. When looking at their website I came across a section where they are selling merchandise; t-shirts, hats, buttons, etc. that all have the name of the church on it. Though I realize I can't pick about everything about choosing a church, I question if that is considered right as I am not sure about it. Could you be able to shed some light on this question? Thank you.

Answer
Tiffany,

I share your concern over this practice. If the church is utilizing this as a fund raiser, I find no support for it in Scripture. If it is done only on a cost recovery basis, I have no problem with it.

In Scripture, Jesus chided the "money changers" for making the Lord's house, which was supposed to be a "house of prayer", into a "den of thieves". This is an example of seeking to use a religious front to make money. Scripture makes it clear that there are two means whereby the Lord's work is to be supported, tithes (10% of increase) and (freewill) offerings.

I do not think it is improper to sell items involving the church's name to promote an awareness of the church, provided that it is only on a cost recovery basis (product cost plus shipping/handling). I am more comfortable when those in the church make freewill donations to cover those costs, and then offer the items for free. I also see no problem with the church offering other items, such as books by Biblically sound authors, provided that it is not to raise funds for the operation of the church.

I hope this has helped.

Expertise

I seek to help Christians in doctrinal matters. Many Christians think that doctrine doesn`t matter, yet the Scriptures indicate otherwise. It is my desire to share from the Word of God with those who have legitimate questions. As such, I cannot claim expertise, except that I will seek to answer from the Authority (the Bible). If I cannot find a Biblical answer, I may offer an opinion based upon my understanding of Scripture, or I will simply reply with an, "I Don`t Know".
