Question
Is it okay for a Christian to engage in sports/watch sports on television?

I see no problem with this; after all, it's only athletic competition.

A few sites I've seen recently seem to condemn most television. I agree that much of what is on television is sinful, and should be avoided. I do not see the sin in watching a game on TV.

As long as it doesn't become an idol, of course.

Relating to this, what does Jesus mean when He says "Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in Him."

I don't think this verse means we can't have hobbies; rather, that those interests should not become an idol in our lives. They should not become more important than God.

Thanks for any help you can give.

Answer
Greetings in the name of Jesus, the Christ...

I'm so sorry for not getting back to you till now..please forgive me.

Sports in and of itself is not sin or wrong.  It's when you place it (sports) before God, meaning if it was church day, and you decided to
watch football (baseball etc.) INSTEAD of going to church and worshipping God, that, then, would be wrong.

as for your second inquiry:
"what does Jesus mean when He says "Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in Him."

I think you know what it means...most people tend to want God's word to say what THEY wish it to say, not what it truly clearly says in black and white.  Most of God's word is to be taken LITERALLY, it means what it says and says what it means. Except for when it is clearly symbolic.
And even then, we are to try our best to get the literal meaning to what is said symbolically.

You see, God is not so much about the THINGS (material) of this world..but about us...he cares more about our spirituality and becoming more like Jesus. Whatever you love, it is that which you will be more concerned about or wish to do, so Jesus is simply saying do not concern yourself with the things of this world, but instead, attain and be concerned with what God has for you. WHY?
Because basically you can't take it with you as the saying goes...everyTHING will pass way or die...but your salvation and you obtaining it...will be forever.

I hope this helps...

Expertise

My main expertise is in Prophecy. I have a B.A. degree in Religion and Church Ministry from a school for Prophets, out of Jacksonville, Florida. I am also quite versed in the Bible as a whole. I am a non-denominational Christian, due to my belief that God never meant for different denominations... there is ONLY one religion (as the word of God says). I consider this to be an excellant way to witness the glory of God to others, and to further His Kingdom, and purposes...before the soon return of His Son, Jesus.
