Christianity -- Christian Living/The Age-Old Question
Expert: Phillip Senn - 7/26/2004
QuestionThis question must have been asked a million times. But I wonder this frequently, and I was wondering if you could give me the answer.
First of all, I do not believe that being homosexual is right, in any way. I do understand that people can be mentally, physically, emotionally and/or all of the above feminine or masculine. Often people like me, who also agree it is wrong, say "Well, it's a choice, they *choose* to be gay." I don't think it is always a choice. And I think that *rarely* a person can be actually born with a physical problem. But, whether they are or are not, I think that all of it is spiritual. And I don't mean from God... Demonic strongholds that go very deep...Some of it is choice, but the thing that is the root of all if it is spiritual. The frightening part is the fact that they can't even see it...satan was spinning his evil plot about them when they were still, or perhaps even before they were in the womb. And he has them under his spell now, causing them to believe it is right... I can't explain very well what I feel but I hope you get the gist of what I'm trying to say.
Well, anyway, my question was...If it says in the bible that homosexuality is wrong, then how do homosexuals and/or people who support homosexuality say that the bible says it's right? Are they twisting the words around? I understand that there are different ways the bible is interpreted...But I feel homosexuality wrong, in my spirit, not just based on what I've heard, or been taught, etc. If you could answer this question it would be greatly appreciated.
AnswerYou are correct in your understanding that homosexuality is wrong. There are many passages in Scripture that so indicate. So why would a person teach or have an understanding that it is okay? There are many reasons that this occurs, but the main reason is found in Romans 1:21-32. It indicates that because they knew (speaking not of the personal relationship, but of a head knowlege) God, they glorified Him not as God. It further states that they did not like to retain God in their knowlege, and therefore He turned them over to a reprobate mind.
As far as Satan having control over them while in the womb, that would not follow Scripture in Psalms 139:12-17. It indicates that all that we are is produced by God in the womb, not by Satan. God doesn't make us homosexual, but God allows those that refuse to accept His statutes and principles as Holy and acceptable to go astray.
The same can be said of any person, believer or unbeliever, that refuses to follow God's direction in their life. He will work with that individual to help them to follow His path for their lives to bring them to a point of receiving Christ Jesus. Then He will work with them to grow them into the image of Christ. But God doesn't forcefully MAKE us follow His will. When we are intent to reject His directions, He allows us to turn to our own devices, which usually end up causing us pain and anguish. This is sometimes God's way of showing us of our need to listen to Him. Parents sometimes also use this method. When the children don't listen, the parents allow them to make their own decisions, that sometimes leads to harm in their lives. This is not because God (or the parents) don't love their children, and it always hurts them more to see their children hurting. But it is a part of the learning process.
In other words, always let God guide your understanding of Him. Worship Him "in spirit and in truth". Proverbs 3:5-7 says, "Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the LORD, and depart from evil."
A wonderful article has been written by Dr. Al Mohler in Baptist Press that further discusses the types of misdirected thinking of some (1 in particular). You can see it at
