Question
Is it okay to sing or include in the "Praise and Worship program" about secular music with changed lyrics?

Really need clarifications and more information about this. Thank you and God bless!

Aby

Answer
Aby,

Many of our traditional hymns and praise songs have music that was at one time secular music. Martin Luther is said to have composed many hymns, borrowing some of the melodies from tavern music.

When is this appropriate or inappropriate? I think it would depend upon the type of music and whether or not it can be adapted in a way that the music as well as the lyrics can glorify the Lord. Some music, in my opinion, can be less effective in leading the spirit of man to honor the Lord. Some may even appeal more to the flesh that the spirit.

Paul had some advice that I would apply in this situation, "And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men; Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ."

Expertise

I seek to help Christians in doctrinal matters. Many Christians think that doctrine doesn`t matter, yet the Scriptures indicate otherwise. It is my desire to share from the Word of God with those who have legitimate questions. As such, I cannot claim expertise, except that I will seek to answer from the Authority (the Bible). If I cannot find a Biblical answer, I may offer an opinion based upon my understanding of Scripture, or I will simply reply with an, "I Don`t Know".
