Question
What can a person do when he/she comes to a place (a house or hotel room etc.) where he/she suspects is "unclean" (or as most people would call "haunted")?

What should he/she do when encountering strange happenings in such a place?

Do crosses or crucifixes or icons drive away unknown spirits?

Answer
A Christian's walk is directed by the Lord and God will empower the Christian to deal with a situation as and when it arises. When the Lord was confronted by a demon possessed man (or men) He delivered the Man from the bondage..
Matt 8:28-34

28 When he arrived at the other side in the region of the Gadarenes, two demon-possessed men coming from the tombs met him. They were so violent that no one could pass that way. 29 "What do you want with us, Son of God?" they shouted. "Have you come here to torture us before the appointed time?"

30 Some distance from them a large herd of pigs was feeding. 31 The demons begged Jesus, "If you drive us out, send us into the herd of pigs."

32 He said to them, "Go!" So they came out and went into the pigs, and the whole herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and died in the water. 33 Those tending the pigs ran off, went into the town and reported all this, including what had happened to the demon-possessed men. 34 Then the whole town went out to meet Jesus. If the Lord leads us to a situation whereby we confront a person possessed by demons He will also guide us what to do in such a situation.
As far as a so called "unclean" hotel room is concerned, these are commercial abodes and a christian is not called into account for everything that happens in such a room. I normally pray and sanctify such a room for the Lord when staying in it. Crucifixes and religious items are NOT TO BE USED AS THE PAGANS USE CHARMS AND AMULETS. In fact there are no so called religious items/crucifixes in the context of the New Testament Church.
