where did the number 3 come from when i think the bible does not tell us a number only that wise men came from the east?

You are correct. the Bible does not give the number of the wise men. Tradition says that there was three, but I am not so sure about that myself. Perhaps it is because three specific gifts were named, and then over the years it was assumed that there were only three wise men.
