Christianity --Youth Issues/What is a sin or not?
Expert: Pastor Don Carpenter - 10/16/2008
QuestionJust recently I accepted God, but friends in school are telling me how many things i thought were sins aren't sins, is wearing pants a sin? wearing earrings? going to parties? dancing? listening to not Christian music? I'm a Pentecostal and as you may know i believe all those are sins, but are they really?
AnswerHi Stephanie,
Thanks for this great question. I want to complement you an your attitude. You seem to want to do what it takes to please God. Good for you! I could go through your list and tell you what I think is sinful and what is not, but that will not help you. You need to see what the Bible says.
Acts 17:10-11
10 And the brethren immediately sent away Paul and Silas by night unto Berea: who coming thither went into the synagogue of the Jews. 11 These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.
The King James Version, (Cambridge: Cambridge) 1769.
You will always have some friends saying one thing and others saying another. You need to keep reading the Bible, and develop your convictions on these things on your own. Ask your pastor or youth pastor for scripture passages to look up on the things that you have questions about. Study them out for yourself and come to your own convictions. This will mean more that if some man tells you what to do or not.
Everyone has an oppinion, it is God's word that matters.
Look up Deuteronomy 22:5
1 Timothy 2:9-15
Philippians 4:8
These are some verses that may help you . Again, go to your pastor for more specific scriptural help.
I hope that this helps you.
