Answer
David,

I have seen this so many times with reguard to other non-believers. Our Christian duty is to tell people the gospel. God will make the change on the heart. If this is a close friend that best way to approach this it this. Tell them that you just want to offer him something. Tell him to let you speak about something that you really care about. have him let you tell the whole story and then discuss it with him. If he is your friend then he will let you tell the gospel story. I would suggest not to get into any arguments because that will just send him the other way. I would also enlist some help from someone who is Bible smart that can be there to answer his questions if he comes up with any that you do not know. You also need to look for a time that he may ask a question about Christianity and use that as an open door to walk through. I always use one last thing when dealing with the un-believer. I try to give them information that is proven facts about Jesus and other biblical events that have been proven. I would also suggest using him past. He believed in the Devil. Well the Devil was created by God so by believing in the Devil he does believe in God.
