Leja-

I beleive God created sex both for pleasure and for reproduction, perhaps equally.

God's plan was for men and women to be married and in a relationship prior to having sex.  Reference the Ten Commandments about adultery.

Societies and cultures have changed over the years - in the Bible we read about men having multiple wives (and not vice versa - never could figure that out).  As society changes, it is now illegal to have more than one wife or husband, and God commands us to follow the laws of man, too.

No one can know for sure, but I believe that God does not want us to be casual about our our lives and our relationships.  A live in relationship, because there is no real legal commitment.  If we are truly to enter into a lifetime commitment, the legality should not be a problem, but if we're not willing to take that step, then I think we should not be having sex, either - sex would become more for fun, than for producing children.

This is an issue that is preventing a LOT of people from becoming Christian, because they want to have the fun of sex without the commitment.  If you were truly wanting to live a pure life, committed to God and God's laws, then you would refrain from sex until you were married.  A lot of people will disagree, but it's what I was brought up to believe, and it's in the Bible.  It's up to you to make the decision which is right for your life.

Blessings,
Carl
