Christianity --Youth Issues/blasphemy

Question
Dear Carl,

I am 15 years old and I think that I have a problem concerning blasphemy. When I was in grade 7 I started attending a christian school and began learning the message of Jesus. I refused to beleve it and discouraged my friends from becoming involved in Christianity either, despite their efforts. I despised going to chapel every Wednesday and could not accept Jesus. Recently, I have realized the truth in this faith and have prayed to receive Jesus. Although I do not recall any specific incidents of blasphemy, I have a vague recollection of committing this sin and I know that Jesus proclaimed it as the only unforgiveable sin. I want to grow as a Christian, but I have a fear that God will condemn me for it. Can God forgive me?

Answer
Hi Maya

I don't think that you have committed the sin of blasphemy at all.  When we first become Christians, it's difficult to understand why Jesus dying could redeem all of us.  I believe that the only way you can commit blasphemy is well after you've become a Christian, and after knowing the truth, rejecting it totally and completely.  That's MY opinion - there is a lot of controversy surrounding the "sin that cannot be forgiven", and I don't think anyone really understands it completely.  Because you are aware of the truth, and have accepted Jesus, your sins are already forgiven, even those you haven't committed yet.  You are human, so you will continue to sin, but God is a big guy, and He will continue to forgive you.

And the mere fact that you "think" you may have committed blasphemy and worry about having offended God is enough to relieve you and be forgiven of that sin.  If you truly committed blasphemy, you wouldn't at all feel guilty about it, you'd just blow it off and say "Big Deal".

Hope this helps.

Blessings,
carl
