Chronic Fatigue Syndrome/Leg weakness, fatigue

Question
My mother has had increased leg weakness during the past year in spite of regular exercising to strengthen them.  She had a 'temporary' minor stroke which seems to have been the catalyst for her current problems.  She is cold and tired all the time.  Little things, like getting into bed, exhaust her. She was having breathing problems as well, but that seems to have improved.  Her doctors have not been able to give her any definitive answers and she continues to weaken.  As a result she struggles with depression.  She has trouble trying to get up from chairs, too, of course.  I am at a loss of how to help her, and we are both frustrated with doctors and tests that don't show any reason for the problems.

Answer
You need to have her doctor run an Epstein Barr blood test.  If it comes back positive then she's got CFIDS.  Until you have those results there isn't much I can recommend right now.  But once you get the results....and if they are positive...I have a list of natural remedies that have helped me as well as a list of websites that will give you more information.  So let me know what you find out and I wish you and your mother good luck.

Expertise

I was diagnosed (finally) with CFIDS (Chronic Fatigue Immune Disfunction Syndrome) in 1993. I am currently in "remission" (for whatever that`s worth). I have experienced the full range of emotions that go along with this disease and will be glad to "listen" to anyone who needs to vent their fears, confusion, frustrations, anger...(it helps). I can share what worked for me and what others have shared that worked for them. I can steer you in directions of help (ie: Social Security Disability claims, natural remedies, support groups, etc.). You are not alone.

Experience

Since my diagnosis, I have done a lot of research on the illness. I started the first support group in my area and organized "training" for physicians, nurses and care givers who believed in this disease and wanted to treat their patients that suffered . (It helped that I had been a Paramedic for 10 years before getting sick and had some medical knowledge.)

Organizations
National CFIDS Association, American Association of Emergency Medical Technicians and Paramedics

Education/Credentials
Emergency Medical Technician II, Emergency Intensive Care Paramedic
