Chrysler Repair - Location of pcm/ecu on 2001 Sebring

Expert: Roland Finston - 11/11/2009

Question
Where is the computer (ecu) located on a 2001 Chrysler Sebring. I have looked behind the glove box and on the right side of the engine compartment beside the fuse box but it is not in either location. Please help! I have been without my car for a week now.

Thank you in advance!

Answer
Hi Andrea,
I believe you will find it more easily if you remove the engine air intake box (where the air filter is located). The ecu (also called the pcm) is located below and inboard from the power distribution box (fuses and relays in that box), and it is held in place on the chassis structural side rail, fairly low in the engine comparment. It has 2 40-pin pluga on the rear edge, and ridges on the surface for heat dissipation. So start be disconnecting the battery, remove the air cleaner box, disconnect the 2 plugs at the rear, and move the harness out of the way, remove 2 bolts and one nut that hold the metal frame in place.  (It is held by a metal frame that is bolted to the side rail and once you remove the fasteners for the frame the unit will come free from the chassis.) Then remove the pcm from the frame.
I should add that I am working from the '03 manual, and that there was a modification by then that combined the engine and transmission controller for the 2.0 and 2.4L engines, and that unit is in front of the power distribution box and has 4 plugs. But I believe you more likely have the 2.7L engine and that the pcm is located as I described and as described for that engine in the '03 manual.
Please let me know if this is correct or not.
Roland
