Chrysler Repair - 'service engine soon' indicator light

Expert: Roland Finston - 11/8/2009

Question
QUESTION: 1999 Chrysler T%26C has service engine soon light on, is this light the same as a check engine? will this effect my emission test and how do i reset it?

ANSWER: Hi John,
If the light is below and slightly inboard to the oil pressure warning light then that is the malfunction indicator light and is the same at the check engine light which says that a fault has been detected in the powertrain and coded in the memory. Turn the ignition switch on-off-on-off-on and leave on, doing that in 5 seconds or less elapsed time. Then watch the odometer window to see if any 4-digit codes appear in place of the mileage reading.
Let me know if you find a code and we'll go from there.

QUESTION: Roland
i tried the on-off on-off on, and got no 4-digit code just the mileage came up. the service light is in a strip above the gages on the top of the dash? this is a town and country as my subject got messed up some how

Answer
Hi John,
I would suggest going to an Autozone parts store for a free fault code readout, or an independent shop for about $40. Get the codes, if any. If none, then it is probably a reminder about some maintenance item. Check your owners manual.
