Chrysler Repair/PT Cruiser Crank Seal/crank end-play spec

Question
Hi, just had the front crank seal go out, not just a leak, but actually "blow out." The car is a 2005 PT Cruiser 2.4 non-turbo at 110,000 miles. Dealer measured crank end play, but it was in spec, just barely at .0090. Since it is near the edge of specs, the mechanic said he can't guarantee the repair. Can I trust this car again, or will the seal blow out again soon? Why would this happen? Common problem?

Thanks!

Answer
Hi Steve,
I think that is a question for an engine rebuilding shop. You are just within spec for the end play, but I also see a "wear limit" just below and indented (implying that it applies to the end play spec) and that is given as 0.0150. So if I am correct in this, you still have some margin of safety. But do check it out with a professional. I don't have questions like yours often so I can' comment on the reason, the frequency, or the prognosis. Given that you are still within spec, I would wonder if the original seal might not have been set too deeply in the hole. Its surface should have been the same as that of the hole.
