Question
About two weeks ago, I noticed my SES light came on. I took the car to Autozone for an OBD II test and it threw a code for LARGE LEAK IN EVAP SYSTEM. they told me this was 95% my gas cap, but it was not. A couple days later, I noticed the Idling has gotten a little rough, and it was becoming hesitant upon acceleration. I bought some tranny fluid and checked but that was fine. yesterday, while driving to work my car died mid intersection and i pushed it into the closest parking lot. the car turns over and cranks, just does not start. I tried having a jump, but it did not help. I had someone listen for the fuel pump to work upon key cycle and it was humming for the 1 second prime. I have not tested the spark plugs. had car rechecked by autozone when the car died but it had not thrown a code. bought a new fuel pump fuse for under the hood, this did not help. the only thing i could think of would be either an EVR valve or crank/camshaft position sensor. the ignition coil on these cars do go out, but for my car the ign. coil is inoperable and would have to replace the entire distributor. please give me advice on what to do. thanks, jake.

Answer
Hi Jake,
I would begin by tracing vacuum the hoses for the evap recovery system as far as you can. There should be system drawing on the underside of the hood.  That system feeds vapor into the intake manifold so if there is a leak that is sizeable it will lean out the mixture too much to sustain an idle. Similarly check that the valve stem of the egr is closing tightly via the built-in spring action. That too would lean out your mixture if faulty in closing. Then let me know if neither of those changes the situation.
