Question
my ac went out on a trip to visit my son this weekend. we were stuck in a traffic jam for about an hour, and the a/c was working ok. when i got on the four lane and accelerated the a/c quit, and i could hear a grinding sound. i pulled over as soon as a could to investigate and noticed that the pulley and the a/c was hardly turning with the engine running. i hope it's only the clutch, but i fear i might have to replace to compressor unit. what is a reasonable cost to have it fixed?      AL

Answer
Hi Al,
I am not in the 'business' so have know real idea of what to expect if the compressor has gone bad. My son just mentioned that his '02 Nissan was making a noise, but still working, and the AC shop said it would be $800 to replace it. Whether the Chrysler would be that much I don't know.
Try doing some comparison shopping, and I hope it may be the clutch rather than the compressor.
The shop time to replace the clutch or compressor is probably not too much, rather it is the cost of the part and the time involved in collecting/reinstalling the refrigerant and getting it tested and pressurized properly.
