Question
I have a 2000 Dodge Intrepid that will only rev up to about 4000 rpms.it idols at a normal speed and starts with no problem. due to no insurance on it i cant test the speed. thanks

Answer
Hi Charles,
The best thing to do is get a fault code readout from the engine control module using a plug in reader. You can often get that done at a nationwide autoparts store such as Autozone for free or from an independent garage for under $40. Get the 4-digit fault code numbers and let me know what they are. Ask for what they mean, what they would recommend that you do and for how much $. Then we can compare that to the shop manual advice and go from there.
It is possible that there is a self-diagnostic capability as well. Try turning the ignition switch:"on-off-on-off-on and leave on" doing that within an elapsed time of 5 seconds or less. Then watch the odometer window to see if the mileage reaing chances to show any 4-digit numbers preceded by a P. Those would be the fault codes we're looking for.
Don't try any repairs without first getting the fault codes. Also, when you write back tell me which size (L) engine you have.
