Chrysler Repair/digital fuel gauge woes: '94 T & C

Question
Hello, Mr. Finston. How do I check my digital fuel gauge on my 1994 Chrysler Town & Country van. The gas tank image continuously flashes, and on a few occasions I was allowed to see how much gas I has left in my tank. Is there a way to check my fuel level anytime I want? I'm tired of waiting for random fuel checks from my own vehicle. Thank you.

Answer
Hi Adonis,
There are several possibilities: the fuel level sending unit in the tank, the wiring from it to the body computer, the body computer, or the electronic cluster. You can first do a cluster self-diagnostic test:
Simultaneously press the trip and trip reset buttons
Turn the ignition switch to 'run'
Release the trip and trip reset buttons
Ideally, 'chec' will appear in the odometer window
Press U.S,/MET button
Ideally 'code' will display in odometer for 4 seconds, followed by '999'
Press U.S./MET button
All displays will illuminate for 6 seconds, then '5' displayed in speedometer
Ideally all segments will light
Then the fuel gauge self-test will begin
You should then get a fuel gauge reading and the cluster asterisk will not be flashing.
Then you have to measure the resistance to ground at pin 18 of the body computer (dark blue wire. Let me know the reading on the at wire in ohms and we'll go from there.
If you get stuck along the way to this point let me know at what point that happened.
If you wish to check the circuit from the fuel tank to the body computer, then find the four wire disconnect under the vehicle near the fuel tank which receives the wires from the fuel pump and the fuel level sender. The dark blue wire on pin 1 goes to a green rectangular disconnect with 16 pins located at the left side of the instrument panel (at pin 6) and from there goes to the body computer blue plug pin 18 (body computer is located to the right of the steering column and has a blue and a natural color plug).
The fuel sender is simply a variable resistor which should range between 2 and 150 ohms.
Let me know what you learn from this above and we'll go on from there.
Thanks for the rating/nomination.
