Chrysler Repair/1995 New Yorker headlamps

Hello Roland:

This old 95 New Yorker is like the energizer bunny: it keeps going but odd things happen occasionally. This time, the high beam indicator stays on after the ignition is shut off and
this evening the battery died. I was able to boost it ok, but noticed that the front headlamps
will not go off after the engine is turned off and the keys removed from the ignition. I removed
the negative cable connection to the battery as a temporary overnight solution to avoid another
dead battery. And yesterday morning my wife noticed that the ABS light and the Traction Off
messages appeared on the dash. These went out after a few minutes when the car warmed up
and the ACC system began to kick in. Many thanks for any suggestions you might have to
correct the problem!

Hi John,
I wonder whether the "optical horn" switch, the one that flashes the high beams as long as you pull it which is part of the headlamp dimmer switch might be stuck in the "on" position because you say it showed the high beam light on the cluster to also be "on". That switch draws on the same fuse as the headlights, but is a separate wire from those. It is hot all the time so it would be like the headlamp circuit except that it gets power even when the headlamps are turned off. You might see if that spring load return is not feeling as strong as it usually does.
On the ABS and traction off lights, has that happened again, and may I ask what you meant by the "ACC system began to kick in". Is the ACC related to the brakes?
Please read the PB below and respond to it.
