Chrysler Repair/2004 Sebring Whine & Battery Light On

Have a 2004 Chrsyler Sebring 4 cyl w/104000 miles.  This morning battery light came on and car also began making whining sound.  It starting as I was rolling, then up to 40-45 mph.  The car was shifting properly and the radio, A/C (electrical stuff) was working.  When I shut it off, it would re-start.  It is now sitting in my parking spot here at work!!!  At idle the whining was not so pronounced.  Has my main belt finally given me my last warning? Is it trany? I have replaced the battery one since owning car, so it's been 5 years now since the replacing of it.  Please advise because I don't have anyone I feel trusting of to take my car to for work.  I've been told too many stories.  Thank you so much.

Hi Pat,
That warning light along with the battery light coming "on" implies to me that your alternator has failed and needs to be replaced. If you open the hood and start the engine you may be able to verify that the whine is coming from the alternator. It is located at the front of the engine (stand by the right front fender) and listen for the sound to be coming from the device that is located hear the firewall and which is powered by its own drive belt.
You can probably get to a shop you trust or do it yourself at home if you don't have to go far as the battery alone may get you there. But don't try to go more than 1 trip without the alternator or the battery will be too weak to go any further.
Let me know if you want the info on replacing it yourself. You can get a rebuilt alternator or have yours rebuilt for less cost than a new one.
Please read the PS (below) and respond to it.
