Question
Ed, I am writing a paper for an American government class. We are writing about the first and second amendments to the Constitution. I would like to include a currrent controversy relating to the seperation of church and state. Can you maybe hook me up with some websites that would be able to point me in the right direction? Thanks for your time.

Answer
Dear Jodi,

Separation of church and state controversies swirl around almost constantly, largely because religious people don't really understand the purpose of such separation: to protect everyone, including them, in the free exercise of their religion. If governments are empowered to make any religious decisions for citizens, then at least a small measure of religious liberty is lost.

You can readily discover current controversies by going to www.au.org or to www.secularhumanism.org or to www.aclu.org or just to a search service like Google or Yahoo or Ask Jeeves and type in "church and state" or "ten commandments" or "prayer in school" or "government prayer" or "graduation prayers" or similar entries. If you add your state or city you'll be able to identify local controversies.

Good luck on your paper. If you have time, I'd like to see a copy of it--if you're willing, send it to ed@buckners.us

Regards,

Ed B.
