ANSWER: ¡Hola!

blasphēmia
blas-fay-me'-ah

Podemos vilipendiar a Dios. Podemos vilipendiar a Jesus.

Hi!

Brother Eliud, your English is well written. However, to help you in understanding, I will reply in both English and Spanish. I can only pray my Spanish is good.

To answer your question, we must define two concepts. First, we must understand blasphemy. Second, we must understand what the Holy Spirit does for us today.

Matthew 12:31, “Wherefore I say unto you, All manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men: but the blasphemy against the Holy Ghost shall not be forgiven unto men.” (KJV)

Matthew 12:31, “Therefore I tell you: every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven against men, but blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven.” (La Biblia de las Américas – The Bible of the Americas – Translated to English)

blasphēmia
blas-fay-me'-ah
From G989; vilification (especially against God): - blasphemy, evil speaking, railing.

We can vilify all men. We can vilify God. We can vilify Jesus. We can vilify the Holy Spirit. Does it remain unforgivable? We come to the second concept we need to understand.

Originally, patriarchs spoke to God directly (Hebrews 1:1). People could speak evil against the patriarchs (and God); another chance was yet forthcoming to receive forgiveness (2nd Chronicles 24:19).

After the fathers, God spoke to the prophets (Hebrews 1:1). People could speak evil against the prophets; another chance was yet forthcoming to receive forgiveness (Genesis 22:18). Both fathers and prophets qualify as men in the specified verse.

After the fathers and prophets, God spoke through the Son (Hebrews 1:2). People could speak evil of Jesus; another chance was yet forthcoming to receive forgiveness (John 14:26).

The Holy Spirit ceased miraculous work and revelation (Micah 7:15, 1st Corinthians 13:9-13, and Ephesians 4:13). No chance remains for us if we reject Him. If we vilify the Holy Spirit, no one else can bring salvation to us. This is the meaning of Matthew 12:31. This is how we are unforgiven if we speak evil of the Holy Spirit; our hearts will be hardened so we cannot hear or accept salvation.

Eliud, I pray this helps your understanding. Please tell me if I can do more for you.

QUESTION: Bro MARVIN:
THIS WAS THE ANSWER THAT I RECEIVED FROM a preacher of a  CHURCH OF CHRIST,  He says: I do not believe that blasphemy against the Holy Spirit can be done today like it was done in Jesus’ day.  In the context of Matthew 12, Jesus had performed a miracle of curing a demon-possessed man (12:22). While the multitudes considered if Jesus was the Messiah, His enemies quickly dismissed the deed and attributed the power that Jesus used to be from Beelzebub, the ruler of Demons (12:24).  In essence, they had seen a miracle  and quickly called the Holy Spirit Satan!  For this to be repeated today would require the use of miracles from the Spirit, would it not?
SO IT MEANS ACCORDING TO THIS BROTHER THAT:
A)Blasphemy against Holy Spirit can not be commited today.
B)Blasphey against Holy Spirit was commited only in the days of Jesus on earth.
Please answer me exactly these two points above.

BY OTHER HAND I KNOW THE OTHER KINDS OF BLASPHEMY CAN BE COMMITED TODAY AND THEY CAN NOT BE UNPARDONABLE SINS.

Answer
¡Hola!

Eliud, mi Hermano, perdón a me por favor. Fui distraído. Yo no incluí alguna información necesaria.

Definitivamente no.

Hi!

Eliud, my Brother, pardon me, please. I was distracted. I did not include some necessary information.

In Matthew 12:31, you are correct. Jesus was falsely accused. However, nothing limits blasphemy to only calling Jesus Satan. Likewise, nothing limits blasphemy towards the Holy Spirit to the rejection of miracles. However, that is a moot point.

Mark 16:15-20, “And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned. And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover. So then after the Lord had spoken unto them, he was received up into heaven, and sat on the right hand of God. And they went forth, and preached every where, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following. Amen.” (KJV)

Mark 16:15-20, “AND told them:  You go throughout the world and preach the gospel to every creature. The one that believes and is baptized will be saved; but the one that does not believe will be condemned. AND these signs will accompany the ones that have believed: in my name they will throw out devils, they will speak in new tongues; will take snakes in hand, and although they drink something deadly, they will not be damaged; on the sick they will put hands, and they will be made well. Then, Lord Jesus, after speaking with them, was received in the sky and sat down at the right hand of God. AND you left and they preached all over, collaborating with the Father, and confirming the word through the signs that continued.” (La Biblia de las Américas - The Bible of the Americas – English Translation)

In Greek, if a verb is present tense, it denotes continuing action. The miracles did not continue, but did they cease to follow in contradiction to this promise? Absolutely not.

John 20:30-31, “And many other signs truly did Jesus in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book: But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.” (KJV)

John 20:30-31, “And many other signs did also Jesus in the presence of His disciples, that are not written in this book; but these were written so that you believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and so that upon believing, have life in his name.” (La Biblia de las Américas - The Bible of the Americas – English Translation)

The miracles are not dead. Their cessation does not mean they never existed. We can make the same accusation today against the first century miracles as those people living in the first century made. This action carries the same penalty it did in the first century.

If we, today, reject the written record of the first century miracles, as outlined in the Bible, we have no other method by which we can be saved.

Eliud, I hope this clarifies the issue. We can blaspheme the Holy Spirit today by rejecting the same miracles that were done in the first century. We do not need miracles today to reject earlier miracles. The first century miracles belong to us as much as the miracles belonged to the people of the first century. Please tell me if I can do more for you.

Expertise

I consider myself to be a "doctrine specialist" if there is such a thing. I offer scripture to support or refute (as needed) any doctrine practiced within what is commonly termed "Christianity" today. I am willing to try questions on prophecy and history, though they are weak points. I have learned a little, however. Also, as I am disabled, I have time to research many things. For example, I can find a congregation of the church within twenty miles of your ZIP Code if one exists. If traveling, I can locate a congregation for your visit. I am accountable in this ministry to a group of Christians. I will share my answers with them for review. If a question is private, I will redact the names for privacy.

Experience

I became a Christian on April 7, 1969. I have been a substitute, spur-of-the-moment preacher for thirty years. My last pulpit was with the congregation in Braswell, GA. My sermons have always contained at least fifty percent scripture. On occasion, I have preached in seven states, and four foreign nations. This is beside my online ministry. I am now, officially retired.

I hope to never mislead anyone saying I'm a member of one group, when I'm really in another as one here does. By his own admission, he isn't a member of the church, but of the "Christian Church" (sic) denomination. If I can be honest, I don't know why others would want to lie.

Education/Credentials
Having already acquired significant Bible education from self-study, I attended 1.5 years of Bible college through the church at Dyersburg, TN (before my health waned) in an attempt to get paper to say I know what I know.
