About Hoyt Roberson
Expertise
I can answer just about any doctrinal, relational, or Scriptural question from a "traditional" church of Christ perspective, and from perspectives of somewhat more progressive congregations. If you want an answer from a particular perspective, let me know that up front, and I'll respond in that vein. If you want to peg me on the liberal-conservative spectrum, I would suggest a bit left of center. Depending on the question though, I might be far left, or perhaps rather toward the right.

Experience
I am currently a shepherd of a congregation (which means, for those of you who aren't Church of Christ folk, I'm one of a handful of people responsible for the spiritual direction and maturity of the congregation, and who hire and fire the ministers). I have served in many capacities including adult class teacher (also current), deacon, administrator, and lay leader at two military bases. I am a life-long member of churches of Christ, mostly mainline congregations, but am quite familiar with more conservative and more liberal congregations and views as well. I read and subscribe to various books and periodicals for churches of Christ, and have discussed a variety of topics with representatives of our various groups both in person, and via mail.

Churches Of Christ - SIN FALL of MAN

Question
1. In accordance to the Bible,: Could Christ Hve Sinned supporting scripture please.

2. Wen Adam sinned (The Fall of Man) Did he immediately die?????   Thank You Very Much.

Answer
Well, good evening, Thermon!

Your first question is somewhat difficult to answer, but I'll give it a shot. You ask if Jesus could have sinned. I think the answer to your question must be "yes." There are two passages that I would use to support that view:

a. Jesus was tempted in all ways like humans. The fact that He was tempted implies He could have given in to the temptation.

b. One way of translating Rom 3.22, is that we are saved by the fidelity, or faithfulness of Jesus. If it is His faithfulness that saves us, this implies that He could have been unfaithful which would have been sin.

The counter argument would be that His divinity would have kept Him from sinning, and it does seem that that may be true. However, the passages to which I've referred above indicate that He could have given in to temptation, and yet He did not.

Your second question has a two part answer. It is clear that Adam did not die immediately since he was expelled from the Garden. The death he died was his separation from God as a result of his not believing God and going with what the Serpent told them. The serpent was correct - their eyes were opened and they knew that they had blown it. They now knew good from evil and were responsible for it. Unfortunately, an "evil" event was not trusting God and eating what they were told not to.

Thanks for asking. If anything I've written above is unclear, or if it prompts more questions, please ask.

Blessings,
