About Joe Norman
Expertise
I can answer questions regarding acceptable worship, organization of the church, or any apsect of the Christian life. I am the son of a preacher and have studied the Bible from cover to cover since I was 12 years old. I am strong in my research skills and do not follow teachings of men. Many will label me as conservative and some might label me as liberal, but I just seek to be biblical. I understand proper exegesis and hermeneutics and apply them. My desire is to share my knowledge of God's Word with others. Please always keep in mind that none of us who are listed as experts here are divinely inspired and therefore it is possible to get incorrect answers from any one of us. Study the Scriptures and decide for yourself if what is taught is true.

Experience
I am the 4th generation in my family to be a faithful member of the church of Christ. I was raised by a preacher and have studied the Bible everyday since I was twelve. I am 44 yrs old now. I am not a "scholar", but I am very familiar with the scriptures.

Organizations
member of the church of Christ, served as a Deacon for a few years at LakeShore church of Christ in Waco, Tx. I currently live in the North Dallas area and worship with the Lewisville church of Christ.

Churches Of Christ - Churches and Politics

Expert: Joe Norman - 9/16/2009

Question
We moved this past year from an urban area to a rural area. We have found that the small churches in this area have incorporated Republican politics into their beliefs and go so far as to endorse candidates from the pulpit.

We have heard many racist jokes about our President as well as other unflattering comments.

This didn't happen in the urban church we attended.

Should churches be this involved in partisan politics?

Answer
Hi John,

I am a conservative politically but am not a racist at all as that is contrary to Christianity. But I also don't think anyone should endorse a candidate from the pulpit or incorporate their politics into the church work or beliefs. I normally try to include scripture in my answers, but can't think of any that apply to this situation.

I do not believe partisan politics have a place in churches officially one way or the other. my problems with our current President have nothing to do with the color of his skin, but everything to do with what he stands for and what he is trying to change the USA into. Yet, I do not speak my political views openly at church services or even on the property at least not publicly.

I hope I have answered your question. Unfortunately there are no scriptures to cover this at all...that I know of anyway.

God bless and I hope you become involved with a congregation that doesn't do that.

In Christian Love, Joe Norman
