hi i was just wondering if you could tell me a bit about a doctrinal issue that has divided christians in the past or present

Historically the first major issue that divided the church was how Jesus was divine, was He a deity on level with God Himself or was He subordinate/under God as a created being.  Both Factions agreed Jesus to be divine, so Constantine decreed a meeting in Nicaea, to decide the issue. In A.D. 325 First Council of Nicaea met and eventually issued the Nicaean Creed, which states that Jesus has always existed and was equal to the Father.  The next major tist was over the bible and what it should contain.  If you want more info please ask another question.
