Question
Can you help me understand 1 Cor 14:2-6. Thank you. I have recently been debating with a friend and I can't seem to understand specifically verses 2-6.

Answer
Hi!

David, let us first quote the passage you study from the KJV.

1st Corinthians 14:2-6, “For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries. But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men to edification, and exhortation, and comfort. He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church. I would that ye all spake with tongues, but rather that ye prophesied: for greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh, with tongues, except he interpret, that the church may receive edifying. Now, brethren, if I come unto you speaking with tongues, what shall I profit you, except I shall speak to you either by revelation, or by knowledge, or by prophesying, or by doctrine?”

The unknown tongue is the scourge of religion. It has caused the invention of doctrine and the cessation of common sense among several denominations which claim to be Christian. In the Greek, the word, “unknown,” is not present. Even in the KJV, it is either italicized and/or grey, or it is bracketed (depending on the edition and the printer): indicating its addition by the translators in an attempt to make the English flow more readily. I find that version comparison, including a return to the Greek with good interlinears, often helps in untangling the confusion added by false doctrine. Let's look at several other versions (some old and some modern - Some I prefer and others I don't - in no particular order) to see if there is a consensus.

1st Corinthians 14:2-6, “For the one speaking in a tongue does not speak to men, but to God, for no one hears, but in spirit he speaks mysteries. But the one prophesying to men speaks for building up, and encouragement, and comfort. The one speaking in a tongue builds himself up, but he prophesying builds up an assembly. And I wish all of you to speak in languages, but rather that you may prophesy. For the one prophesying is greater than the one speaking in tongues, unless he interpret, that the assembly may receive building up. But now, brothers, if I come to you speaking in tongues, what will I profit you, except I speak to you either in revelation, or in knowledge, or in prophecy, or in teaching?” (Green's Literal Translation of the Holy Bible)

1st Corinthians 14:2-6, “For the person who speaks in a tongue does not speak to people but to God. Indeed, no one understands him, because he is speaking secrets in the Spirit. But the person who prophesies speaks to people for their upbuilding, encouragement, and comfort. The person who speaks in a tongue builds himself up, but the person who prophesies builds the church up. Now I wish that all of you could speak in tongues, but especially that you could prophesy. The person who prophesies is more important than the person who speaks in a tongue, unless he interprets it so that the church may be built up. Indeed, brothers, if I come to you speaking in tongues, what good will I be to you unless I speak to you in some revelation, knowledge, prophecy, or teaching?” (International Standard Version)

1st Corinthians 14:2-6, “Those who speak in strange tongues do not speak to others but to God, because no one understands them. They are speaking secret truths by the power of the Spirit. But those who proclaim God's message speak to people and give them help, encouragement, and comfort. Those who speak in strange tongues help only themselves, but those who proclaim God's message help the whole church. I would like for all of you to speak in strange tongues; but I would rather that you had the gift of proclaiming God's message. For the person who proclaims God's message is of greater value than the one who speaks in strange tongues---unless there is someone present who can explain what is said, so that the whole church may be helped. So when I come to you, my friends, what use will I be to you if I speak in strange tongues? Not a bit, unless I bring you some revelation from God or some knowledge or some inspired message or some teaching.”(Good News Bible)

1st Corinthians 14:2-6, “For the one speaking in a tongue does not speak to people _but_ to God, for no one understands [him], but in [his] spirit [or, by [the] Spirit] he speaks secrets [or, mysteries]. But the one prophesying to people speaks edification and exhortation [or, encouragement] and comfort. The one speaking in a tongue edifies himself, but the one prophesying edifies [the] assembly. Now I want you* all to be speaking with tongues, but more that you* shall be prophesying. For the one prophesying [is] greater than the one speaking with tongues, unless he interprets [or, translates], so that the assembly receives edification. But now, brothers [and sisters], if I come to you* speaking with tongues, what will I benefit you*, unless I speak to you* either with a revelation or with knowledge or with prophesy or with teaching?” (Analytical Literal Translation)

1st Corinthians 14:2-6, “For he that speaketh in a tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God; for no man understandeth; but in the spirit he speaketh mysteries. But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men edification, and exhortation, and consolation. He that speaketh in a tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church. Now I would have you all speak with tongues, but rather that ye should prophesy: and greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, except he interpret, that the church may receive edifying. But now, brethren, if I come unto you speaking with tongues, what shall I profit you, unless I speak to you either by way of revelation, or of knowledge, or of prophesying, or of teaching?” (American Standard Version)

1st Corinthians 14:2-6, “For he who makes use of tongues is not talking to men but to God; because no one has the sense of what he is saying; but in the Spirit he is talking of secret things. But the word of the prophet gives men knowledge and comfort and strength. He who makes use of tongues may do good to himself; but he who gives the prophet's word does good to the church. Now though it is my desire for you all to have the power of tongues, it would give me more pleasure to be hearing the prophet's word from you; for this is a greater thing than using tongues, if the sense is not given at the same time, for the good of the church. But, now, my brothers, if I come to you using tongues, what profit will it be to you, if I do not give you a revelation, or knowledge, or the word of the prophet, or teaching?” (Bible in Basic English)

1st Corinthians 14:2-6, “For he that speaketh in a tongue, speaketh not unto men, but unto God; for no one understandeth what is said; yet in the spirit, he speaketh a mystery. But he that prophesieth, speaketh unto men, for edification, and exhortation, and consolation. He that speaketh in a tongue, edifieth himself: and he that prophesieth, edifieth the church. Now I would that ye all spoke with tongues, but rather that ye prophesied; for greater is he that prophesieth, than he that speaketh in a tongue, unless he interpret; and if he interpret, he edifieth the church. And now, my brethren, if I should come among you, and speak to you in tongues, what should I profit you; unless I should speak to you either by revelation, or by knowledge, or by prophecy, or by doctrine?” (James Murdock New Testament)

1st Corinthians 14:2-6, “For he that speaketh in an unknown language, speaketh not to men, but to God: for no man understandeth him; yet in the spirit he speaketh mysteries. But he that prophesieth, speaketh to men to edification, and exhortation, and comfort. He that speaketh in an unknown language edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church. I would that ye all spoke in languages, but rather that ye prophesied: for greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh in languages, except he interpret, that the church may receive edifying. Now, brethren, if I come to you speaking in languages, what shall I profit you, except I shall speak to you either by revelation, or by knowledge, or by prophesying, or by doctrine?” ([Noah] Webster Bible of 1833)

1st Corinthians 14:2-6, “For he who speaks in an unknown tongue is not speaking to men, but to God; for no one understands him. Yet in the Spirit he is speaking secret truths. But he who prophesies speaks to men words of edification, encouragement and comfort. He who speaks in an unknown tongue does good to himself, but he who prophesies does good to the Church. I should be right glad were you all to speak in 'tongues,' but yet more glad were you all to prophesy. And, in fact, the man who prophesies is superior to him who speaks in 'tongues,' except when the latter can interpret in order that the Church may get a blessing. But, brethren, as things are, if I come to you speaking in 'tongues,' what benefit shall I confer on you, if the utterance is neither in the form of a revelation nor of additional knowledge nor of prophecy nor of teaching?” (1912 Weymouth New Testament)

1st Corinthians 14:2-6, “for he who is speaking in an unknown tongue--to men he doth not speak, but to God, for no one doth hearken, and in spirit he doth speak secrets; and he who is prophesying to men doth speak edification, and exhortation, and comfort; he who is speaking in an unknown tongue, himself doth edify, and he who is prophesying, an assembly doth edify; and I wish you all to speak with tongues, and more that ye may prophecy, for greater is he who is prophesying than he who is speaking with tongues, except one may interpret, that the assembly may receive edification. And now, brethren, if I may come unto you speaking tongues, what shall I profit you, except I shall speak to you either in revelation, or in knowledge, or in prophesying, or in teaching?” (1898 Young's Literal Translation)

1st Corinthians 14:2-6, “For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God. For no one hears, but in spirit he speaks mysteries. But he who prophesies speaks to men for building up, and exhortation, and comfort. The one speaking in a tongue builds himself up, but he prophesying builds up a church. I wish all of you to speak in languages, but rather that you may prophesy; for greater is he prophesying than he speaking in tongues, unless he interpret so that the church may receive building up. But now, brothers, if I come to you speaking in tongues, what will I profit you, except I speak to you either in revelation, or in knowledge, or in prophecy, or in teaching?” (Modern King James Version)

1st Corinthians 14:2-6, “For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God, for no one understands him; however, in the spirit he speaks mysteries. But he who prophesies speaks edification and exhortation and comfort to men. He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church. I wish you all spoke with tongues, but even more that you prophesied; for[a] he who prophesies is greater than he who speaks with tongues, unless indeed he interprets, that the church may receive edification. But now, brethren, if I come to you speaking with tongues, what shall I profit you unless I speak to you either by revelation, by knowledge, by prophesying, or by teaching?” (New King James Version, © 1982 by Thomas Nelson, Inc. 1st Corinthians 14:2-6, “For anyone who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God. Indeed, no one understands him; he utters mysteries with his spirit. But everyone who prophesies speaks to men for their strengthening, encouragement and comfort. He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church. I would like every one of you to speak in tongues, but I would rather have you prophesy. He who prophesies is greater than one who speaks in tongues, unless he interprets, so that the church may be edified. Now, brothers, if I come to you and speak in tongues, what good will I be to you, unless I bring you some revelation or knowledge or prophecy or word of instruction?” (NEW INTERNATIONAL VERSION®. 1st Corinthians 14:2-6, “For he that speaketh in a tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God; for no man understandeth; but in the spirit he speaketh mysteries. But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men edification, and comfort, and consolation. He that speaketh in a tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church. Now I would have you all speak with tongues, but rather that ye should prophesy: and greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, except he interpret, that the church may receive edifying. But now, brethren, if I come unto you speaking with tongues, what shall I profit you, unless I speak to you either by way of revelation, or of knowledge, or of prophesying, or of teaching?” (Revised Version)

1st Corinthians 14:2-6, “When a person speaks in another language, he doesn't speak to people but to God. No one understands him. His spirit is speaking mysteries. But when a person speaks what God has revealed, he speaks to people to help them grow, to encourage them, and to comfort them. When a person speaks in another language, he helps himself grow. But when a person speaks what God has revealed, he helps the church grow. I wish that all of you could speak in other languages, but especially that you could speak what God has revealed. The person who speaks what God has revealed is more important than the person who speaks in other languages. This is true unless he can interpret what he says to help the church grow. Brothers and sisters, it wouldn't do you any good if I came to you speaking in other languages, unless I explained revelation, knowledge, prophecy, or doctrine to you.” ("God's Word")

1st Corinthians 14:2-6, “If you speak languages that others don't know, God will understand what you are saying, though no one else will know what you mean. You will be talking about mysteries that only the Spirit understands. But when you prophesy, you will be understood, and others will be helped. They will be encouraged and made to feel better. By speaking languages that others don't know, you help only yourself. But by prophesying you help everyone in the church. I am glad for you to speak unknown languages, although I had rather for you to prophesy. In fact, prophesying does much more good than speaking unknown languages, unless someone can help the church by explaining what you mean. My friends, what good would it do, if I came and spoke unknown languages to you and didn't explain what I meant? How would I help you, unless I told you what God had shown me or gave you some knowledge or prophecy or teaching?” (Contemporary English Version)

1st Corinthians 14:2-6, “For he that speaks with a tongue does not speak to men but to God: for no one hears; but in spirit he speaks mysteries. But he that prophesies speaks to men in edification, and encouragement, and consolation. He that speaks with a tongue edifies himself; but he that prophesies edifies the assembly. Now I desire that ye should all speak with tongues, but rather that ye should prophesy. But greater is he that prophesies than he that speaks with tongues, unless he interpret, that the assembly may receive edification. And now, brethren, if I come to you speaking with tongues, what shall I profit you, unless I shall speak to you either in revelation, or in knowledge, or in prophecy, or in teaching?” (1889 Darby Bible)

1st Corinthians 14:2-6, “For he that speaketh in a tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man heareth. Yet by the Spirit he speaketh mysteries. But he that prophesieth speaketh to men unto edification and exhortation and comfort. He that speaketh in a tongue edifieth himself: but he that prophesieth, edifieth the church. And I would have you all to speak with tongues, but rather to prophesy. For greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues: unless perhaps he interpret, that the church may receive edification. But now, brethren, if I come to you speaking with tongues, what shall I profit you, unless I speak to you either in revelation or in knowledge or in prophecy or in doctrine?” (1899 Douay-Rheims Bible)

1st Corinthians 14:2-6, “For he who speaks in an unknown tongue speaks not to men, but to God, for no one understands him; however, in the spirit he speaks mysteries. But he who prophesies speaks edification and exhortation and comfort. He who speaks in an unknown tongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church. Now I wish you all spoke in tongues, but even more that you should prophesy; for he who prophesies is greater than he who speaks in tongues, unless he interprets, so that the church may receive edification. But now, brothers, if I come to you speaking in tongues, what shall I profit you unless I speak to you either in a revelation, or in knowledge, or in a prophesy, or in doctrine?” (English Majority Text Version)

1st Corinthians 14:2-6, “For one who speaks in a tongue speaks not to men but to God; for no one understands him, but he utters mysteries in the Spirit. On the other hand, the one who prophesies speaks to people for their upbuilding and encouragement and consolation. The one who speaks in a tongue builds up himself, but the one who prophesies builds up the church. Now I want you all to speak in tongues, but even more to prophesy. The one who prophesies is greater than the one who speaks in tongues, unless someone interprets, so that the church may be built up. Now, brothers, if I come to you speaking in tongues, how will I benefit you unless I bring you some revelation or knowledge or prophecy or teaching?” (English Standard Version)

1st Corinthians 14:2-6, “For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God, for no man understandeth him, however it may be that in the spirit he speaketh mysteries. But he that prophesieth, speaketh unto men for edification and exhortation and comfort. He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself, but he that prophesieth edifieth the church. I would that ye all spoke with tongues, but rather that ye prophesied; for greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, unless he interpret, that the church may receive edifying. 1st Corinthians 14:2-6, “For one who speaks in an [unknown] tongue speaks not to men but to God, for no one understands or catches his meaning, because in the [Holy] Spirit he utters secret truths and hidden things [not obvious to the understanding]. But [on the other hand], the one who prophesies [who interprets the divine will and purpose in inspired preaching and teaching] speaks to men for their upbuilding and constructive spiritual progress and encouragement and consolation. He who speaks in a [strange] tongue edifies and improves himself, but he who prophesies [interpreting the divine will and purpose and teaching with inspiration] edifies and improves the church and promotes growth [in Christian wisdom, piety, holiness, and happiness]. Now I wish that you might all speak in [unknown] tongues, but more especially [I want you] to prophesy (to be inspired to preach and interpret the divine will and purpose). He who prophesies [who is inspired to preach and teach] is greater (more useful and more important) than he who speaks in [unknown] tongues, unless he should interpret [what he says], so that the church may be edified and receive good [from it]. Now, brethren, if I come to you speaking in [unknown] tongues, how shall I make it to your advantage unless I speak to you either in revelation (disclosure of God's will to man) in knowledge or in prophecy or in instruction?” (Amplified® Bible, Copyright © 1954, 1958, 1962, 1964, 1965, 1987 by The Lockman Foundation Used by permission.)

1st Corinthians 14:2-6, “For the person who speaks in [another] language is not speaking to men but to God, since no one understands him; however, he speaks mysteries in the Spirit. But the person who prophesies speaks to people for edification, encouragement, and consolation. The person who speaks in [another] language builds himself up, but he who prophesies builds up the church. I wish all of you spoke in other languages, but even more that you prophesied. 1st Corinthians 14:2-6, “I will explain why. Those who have the gift of speaking in different languages are not speaking to people; they are speaking to God. No one understands them; they are speaking secret things through the Spirit. But those who prophesy are speaking to people to give them strength, encouragement, and comfort. The ones who speak in different languages are helping only themselves, but those who prophesy are helping the whole church. I wish all of you had the gift of speaking in different kinds of languages, but more, I wish you would prophesy. Those who prophesy are greater than those who can only speak in different languages—unless someone is there who can explain what is said so that the whole church can be helped. Brothers and sisters, will it help you if I come to you speaking in different languages? No! It will help you only if I bring you a new truth or some new knowledge, or prophecy, or teaching.” (New Century Version. Copyright © 2005 by Thomas Nelson, Inc. Used by permission. 1st Corinthians 14:2-6, “For if you have the ability to speak in tongues, you will be talking only to God, since people won’t be able to understand you. You will be speaking by the power of the Spirit, but it will all be mysterious. But one who prophesies strengthens others, encourages them, and comforts them. A person who speaks in tongues is strengthened personally, but one who speaks a word of prophecy strengthens the entire church. I wish you could all speak in tongues, but even more I wish you could all prophesy. For prophecy is greater than speaking in tongues, unless someone interprets what you are saying so that the whole church will be strengthened. Dear brothers and sisters, if I should come to you speaking in an unknown language, how would that help you? But if I bring you a revelation or some special knowledge or prophecy or teaching, that will be helpful.” (New Living Translation, copyright 1996, 2004. 1st Corinthians 14:2-6, “The person who talks in tongues of a different language does not talk to people, but to God. People do not understand what he says. But he is saying secret things by the Spirit. But the person who is a prophet speaks words from God to people plainly. He helps them to believe and to be strong, and he comforts them. The person who talks in a different tongue helps himself. But the one who tells forth God's word helps all the people in the church. I wish that you could all talk in different tongues. But I want even more that you should speak words from God for all to hear and understand. The person who speaks words from God is greater than the person who talks in tongues - unless he is able to tell the meaning of his words, so that he helps all the people in the church. My brothers, if I come to you and talk in tongues of a different language, how can I help you? I cannot help you if I do not tell you something God has shown to me, or something I know, or God's word, or some teaching.” (Worldwide English New Testament)

1st Corinthians 14:2-6, “For he who speaks in a tongue speaks not to men, but to God, for no man hears, but in spirit he speaks mysteries. 1st Corinthians 14:2-6, “The for one speaking with a tongue, not to men speaks, but to the God; no one for hears, in spirit but he speaks mysteries; the but one prophesying, to men speaks edification and exhortation and consolation. The one speaking with a tongue, himself build ups; the but one prophesying, a congregation builds up. I wish and all you to speak with tongues, rather but that you may prophesy; greater for the one prophesying than the one speaking with tongues, unless if not he should interpret, so that the congregation edification may receive. 1st Corinthians 14:2-6, “For he that speaks in an [unknown] tongue speaks not unto men, but unto God, for no one understands [him], even though by the Spirit he speaks mysteries. But he that prophesies speaks unto men [for] edification and exhortation and comfort. He that speaks in an [unknown] tongue edifies himself, but he that prophesies edifies the church. 1st Corinthians 14:2-6, “For he who speaks in a foreign language, speaks not to men, but to God; for no one understands him: nevertheless, by the Spirit he speaks secrets. But he who prophesies, speaks to men for edification, and exhortation, and consolation. He who speaks in a foreign language, edifies himself: but he who prophesies, edifies the congregation. I wish, indeed, that you all spoke in foreign languages; but rather that you prophesied: for greater is he who prophesies, than he who speaks in foreign languages, unless, indeed, he interpret, that the congregation may receive edification. 1st Corinthians 14:2-6, “For the one speaking in a tongue does not speak to people but to God, for no one understands; he is speaking mysteries by the Spirit. I would like for you all to speak in tongues, but even more that you would prophesy: for greater is he who prophesies than he who speaks with tongues, unless he interprets, so that the church may be edified. Now, brethren, if I come to you speaking with tongues, how will I benefit you, unless I shall speak to you some revelation, or knowledge, or prophesy, or instruction?” (Revised King James New Testament)

1st Corinthians 14:2-6, “For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto Elohim: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries. But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men to edification, and exhortation, and comfort. He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the assembly. I would that ye all spake with tongues, but rather that ye prophesied: for greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, except he interpret, that the assembly may receive edifying. Now, brethren, if I come unto you speaking with tongues, what shall I profit you, except I shall speak to you either by revelation, or by knowledge, or by prophesying, or by doctrine?” (Restored Name King James Version)

1st Corinthians 14:2-6, “For, he that speaketh with a tongue, not unto men, doth speak, but, unto God,—for, no one, understandeth, although, in spirit, he is speaking sacred secrets; But, be that prophesieth, unto men, doth speak—edification, and exhortation, and comfort. He that speaketh with a tongue, buildeth up, himself, whereas, he that prophesieth, buildeth up, an assembly. Howbeit I wish you all to speak with tongues, but, rather, that ye may prophesy,—moreover, greater, is he that prophesieth, than he that speaketh with tongues,—unless indeed he translate, that, the assembly, may receive upbuilding. But, now, brethren—if I come unto you speaking with tongues, what shall I profit, you, except I speak, unto you, either by way of revelation, or knowledge, or prophesying, or teaching?” (The Emphasized Bible by J.B. Rotherham)

1st Corinthians 14:2-6, “He who, when speaking, uses the gift of 'tongues' is speaking, not to men, but to God, for no one understands him; yet in spirit he is speaking of hidden truths. But he who preaches is speaking to his fellow men words that will build up faith, and give them comfort and encouragement. He who, when speaking, uses the gift of 'tongues' builds up his own faith, while he who preaches builds up the faith of the Church. Now I want you all to speak in 'tongues,' but much more I wish that you should preach. A Preacher is of more account than he who speaks in 'tongues,' unless he interprets his words, so that the faith of the Church may be built up. This being so, Brothers, what good shall I do you, if I come to you and speak in 'tongues,' unless my words convey some revelation, or knowledge, or take the form of preaching or teaching?” (Twentieth Century New Testament)

1st Corinthians 14:2-6, “For he that speaketh with toges speaketh not vnto men but vnto god for no man heareth him how be it in the sprete he speaketh misteries. But he that prophesieth speaketh vnto men to edifyinge to exhortacion and to comforte. He that speaketh with tonges proffiteth him silfe: he that prophesyeth edifieth the congregacion. I wolde that ye all spake with tonges: but rather that ye prophesied. For greater is he that prophisieth? then he yt speaketh with tonges except he expounde it also that the congregacion maye have edifyinge. Now brehren if I come vnto you speakige wt tonges: what shall I profit you excepte I speake vnto you other by revelacio or knowledge or prophesyinge or doctrine.” (William Tyndale Bible 1525/1530)

1st Corinthians 14:2-6, “For he that speaks in an unknown tongue speaks not unto men, but unto God: for no man understands him; nevertheless in the spirit a he speaks mysteries. But he that prophesies speaks unto men to edification, and exhortation, and comfort. He that speaks in an unknown tongue edifies himself; but he that prophesies edifies the church. I would that all of you all spoke with tongues but rather that all of you prophesied: for greater is he that prophesies than he that speaks with tongues, except he interpret, that the church may receive edifying. Now, brethren, if I come unto you speaking with tongues, what shall I profit you, except I shall speak to you either by revelation, or by knowledge, or by prophesying, or by doctrine?” (Updated King James Version)

1st Corinthians 14:2-6, “For he who speaks in another language speaks not to men, but to God; for no one understands; but in the Spirit he speaks mysteries. But he who prophesies speaks to men for their edification, exhortation, and consolation. He who speaks in another language edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the assembly. Now I desire to have you all speak with other languages, but rather that you would prophesy. For he is greater who prophesiesthan he who speaks with other languages, unless he interprets, that the assembly may be built up. But now, brothers,a if I come to you speaking with other languages, what would I profit you, unless I speak to you either by wayof revelation, or of knowledge, or of prophesying, or of teaching?” (World English Bible)

1st Corinthians 14:2-6, “For when one speaks while in a trance, he is not addressing men but God, and nobody catches on to what he is saying, for by means of a Spirit he is talking about hidden things. But when one preaches, he is speaking to men for their encouragement and inspiration and enlightenment. He who speaks in a trance benefits only himself, but he who preaches benefits the whole congregation. I’d like for all of you to be able to speak in a trance, but I’d much rather you’d simply preach. For preaching is much better than speaking in a trance, except perhaps when someone can interpret so the whole congregation might be benefited. Now brothers, suppose I come to you speaking in a trance. Would it do you any good unless what I had to say were in the form of an insight or instruction or a sermon or a lesson?” (The Cotton Patch Version by Clarence Jordan)

1st Corinthians 14:2-6, “For he that speaketh with the tongue, speaketh not vnto men, but vnto God: For no man heareth [hym]. Howbeit, in the spirite he speaketh misteries. But he that prophesieth, speaketh vnto men to their edifiyng, to their exhortation, and to their comfort. He that speaketh with the tongue, edifieth hym selfe: he that prophesieth, edifieth the Churche. I woulde yt ye al spake with tongues, but rather that ye prophesied: For greater is he that prophesieth, then he that speaketh with tongues, except he expounde it, that the Churche may haue edifiyng. Nowe brethren, yf I come vnto you speakyng with tongues, what shall I profite you, except I speake to you eyther by reuelation, or by knowledge, or by prophesiyng, or by doctrine?” (1568 Bishop's Bible)

1st Corinthians 14:2-6, “If anyone speaks in tongues he is talking with God, not with men and women; no one understands him, for he speaks divine mysteries in the Spirit. On the other hand, if anyone prophesies, he is talking to men and women, and his words have power to build; they stimulate and encourage. Speaking in tongues may build up the speaker himself, but it is prophecy that builds up a Christian community. I am happy for you all to speak in tongues, but happier still for you to prophecy. The prophet is worth more than one who speaks in tongues -- unless indeed he can explain its meaning, and so help to build up the community. Suppose, my friends, that when I come to you I speak in tongues: what good shall I do you unless what I say contains something by way of revelation, or enlightenment, or prophecy, or instruction?” (Revised English Version, Oxford Press 1989)

Thus we see 47 translations in English. Though there is no consensus, there is a definite pattern forming. Even so, I want us to look at three interlinears before we go further. Please understand that in interlinears, the translation follows the Greek text, rather than the rules of English. Therefore, it can be confusing if you are not careful. Please watch closely as we proceed. The word numbers are includid. If you have a Strong's or Thayer's Lexicon with numbers, you can check the translations for yourself.

After looking at all of these, consider my full translation into English.

1st Corinthians 14:2-6, “Because one who preaches {in untaught} languages cannot preach unto men but God: because nobody understands in the spirit; but he speaks mysteries. However, one who prophesies unto men preaches edification, and solace, and comfort. One who preaches {in untaught} languages emboldens himself; but one who prophesies confirms the church. Now I desire every one of you preach {in untaught} languages, but in greater degree prophesying, because one who prophesies indeed is greater {than} one who preaches {in untaught} languages, unless he {is} not interpreting that the church may obtain edification. But now Brethren, if I come to you preaching {in untaught} languages, what is your benefit if I preach not to you except in disclosure, or in knowledge, or in prophecy, or in doctrine?” (The American's Complete Translation of Scripture,® {A parallel version with the original Hebrew/Greek, KJV and new translations into English and Spanish} [The A.C.T.S.®], Copyright © pending, All Rights Reserved, by Marvin Howard)

That was long, but I hope it was worth it to you. At least you have the various versions to use in your debates. Now we come to our explanation of the passage, which will be nowhere near as lengthy. You see how I treated the word “unknown” from the KJV; “untaught.” “Tongues” I rendered as “languages.” I am far from being the only one to treat these this way. Allow me to give you the Strong's definition for “tongues” before we continue, so you may see why.

γλῶσσα
glōssa
gloce'-sah
Of uncertain affinity; the tongue; by implication a language (specifically one naturally unacquired): - tongue.

You see, the definition of “tongue” includes both the organ in the mouth and a language which is naturally acquired. It is not supernatural or Heavenly in nature.

Many wish to say they speak in the unknown tongues of angels; since they cannot speak in another extant language of the earth, and they think they are supposed to speak something. However, the Bible addresses this language, too.

2nd Corinthians 12:1-4, “It is not expedient for me doubtless to glory. I will come to visions and revelations of the Lord. I knew a man in Christ above fourteen years ago, (whether in the body, I cannot tell; or whether out of the body, I cannot tell: God knoweth;) such a one caught up to the third heaven. And I knew such a man, (whether in the body, or out of the body, I cannot tell: God knoweth;) How that he was caught up into paradise, and heard unspeakable words, which it is not lawful for a man to utter.”

Whoever this was is a subject of further debate. Nevertheless, for our discussion it is moot. The point is the language of the third Heaven, the abode of the angels, is not lawful for a man to speak. To try and succeed is to be a criminal. To try and fail is to be a fraud. So, what kind of tongue speaking is authorized for mankind?

Acts 2:4-6, “And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven. Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language.”

When filled with the miraculous gift of tongue speaking, the Apostles spoke in real languages from other nations. It would be the equivalent today if I went to China, and never having studied Chinese (Mandarin or otherwise), and I could suddenly speak truth in Chinese. That is why the KJV added the word “unknown,” and I added the word “untaught.” Miraculous tongue speaking is the antithesis of the natural definition of “tongue.”

Are we supposed to speak in tongues today? The short answer is, “No!” This has been so long that I will not prove it in this forum. If you desire to see my proof you may view the third sermon I ever posted online at:

David, I know this is more than that for which you bargained when you asked your question. I pray that it interests you as much as it did me. I applaud your search and thirst for knowledge. I pray that you will not rest until you find the truth of God's Word in everything you do as you prepare for Heaven. If I can be of further assistance to you in this quest, please let me know.

I consider myself to be a "doctrine specialist" if there is such a thing. I offer scripture to support or refute (as needed) any doctrine practiced within what is commonly termed "Christianity" today. I am willing to try questions on prophecy and history, though they are weak points. I have learned a little, however. Also, as I am disabled, I have time to research many things. For example, I can find a congregation of the church within twenty miles of your ZIP Code if one exists. If traveling, I can locate a congregation for your visit. I am accountable in this ministry to a group of Christians. I will share my answers with them for review. If a question is private, I will redact the names for privacy.

Experience

I became a Christian on April 7, 1969. I have been a substitute, spur-of-the-moment preacher for thirty years. My last pulpit was with the congregation in Braswell, GA. My sermons have always contained at least fifty percent scripture. On occasion, I have preached in seven states, and four foreign nations. This is beside my online ministry. I am now, officially retired.

I hope to never mislead anyone saying I'm a member of one group, when I'm really in another as one here does. By his own admission, he isn't a member of the church, but of the "Christian Church" (sic) denomination. If I can be honest, I don't know why others would want to lie.

Education/Credentials
Having already acquired significant Bible education from self-study, I attended 1.5 years of Bible college through the church at Dyersburg, TN (before my health waned) in an attempt to get paper to say I know what I know.
