Question
I did the salt test on 2 hygrometers(west calibor&madaline) in the same tupperware and after about 15hrs the readings were: (1st)81% and (2nd) 74%. So 1st is -6% and 2nd is +1% thats ok i took a picture to alaways remember it.
I use 1pound of hertfield 70%beads, spread out in a footlocker humidor, which is 3x more then what i'm ment to use.
Now the problem is looking inside my humidor the 1st hygrometer reads 79% and 2nd 67%, so thats: 73% & 68% which is the correct RH level? or do i just say that the RH is in between those two readings and if it does not change then i should be ok.....

Answer
Hi Mario,

It's hard to tell why your hygrometers have different readings without looking at your setup but based on the level readings you've provided, I would say both hygrometers are fairly accurate and showing reasonable readings. Hygrometer #1 is only off by 3% (73%) and Hygrometer #2 is off by 2% (68%).

It's hard to tell which one has the correct RH so you should use a digital hygrometer to have a more accurate reading.  Or, if you have an extra analog hygrometer (salt-tested), add that to the footlocker humidor with the other two hygrometers and see if it has the same reading as one of these two hygrometers.  If it does, the hygrometer that matches it is the accurate one.

Hopes this helps.  As always, if you have any more questions, please feel free to just ask and I will be happy to help.

Regards,
James

Expertise

My main area of expertise is Cuban cigars but I can also assist you with cigar etiquette, humidor maintenance and troubleshooting. Unsure of a certain cigar brand? Wondering what a certain cigar tastes like? Have any questions about Cuban cigars? Just let me know! I have smoked every brand of Cuban cigars and most reputable non-Cuban cigar brands on a regular basis so I know a fair bit about taste profiles, cigar etiquette and other fine nuances to cigar smoking. (NOTE: My main focus is on premium, hand-rolled cigars and not cheap, machine made, convenience store cigars.) IMPORTANT: PLEASE NOTE THAT I DO NOT PROVIDE CIGAR OR CIGAR-RELATED APPRAISALS. If you have a vintage cigar item and you want to know if it's worth something, please contact an antique dealer that specializes in "TOBACCIANA".

Experience

I currently have 19 dedicated years of cigar smoking and counting. I have smoked every brand of Cuban cigars and most reputable non-Cuban cigar brands on a regular basis so I know a fair bit about taste profiles, cigar etiquette and other fine nuances to cigar smoking. For 5 years, I studied with Cuban torcedores (rollers), catadores (taste testers) and revisadores (inspectors) on every aspect involving the production of the Cuban cigar and I am currently writing a book that will help beginners understand everything they need to know about cigars and cigar smoking.
