Question
Hello Bill, and thank you for your time.
Can you direct me to a very "woody tasting" cigar? I had one a few years ago, it had no band and it was a mystery as to where it came from. It had an almost hickory smoked taste that I cannot forget, and have never been able to match this taste with any other cigar I have tried.

Thank you
Kurt

Answer
Kurt,

That is an unusual request, but a brand came to mind as soon as you mentioned woody. Try Royal Jamaica Gold. Made by Altadis USA in the Dominican Republic, they use a Nicaraguan wrapper and binder along with Jamaican, Honduran and Nicaraguan filler. They are one of the most unique tasting brands I have ever smoked, and I think "woody" is a good description of their character. They are not one of the most common brands, so you may have a little trouble finding them. If so, let me know - we stock them at our retail store.

Thanks,
Bill

Expertise

I'm a fourth generation cigar maker and have spent 25+ years operating our factory as well as a mail order cigar company. I belong to cigar manufacturers associations as well as retail cigar associations so I'm usually up to date with current events relating to cigars. I've smoked the majority of brands on the market and would be happy to share my opinions of them with you. Since I live in the U.S. I have very little experience with Cuban cigars, but other than that I know a least a little bit about almost every brand of cigars on the market.

Experience

In addition to growing up in and now managing our cigar factory for 25+ years, I've spent time in many factories in Honduras, Nicaragua, The Dominican Republic and Mexico. BR>
