Cigars/Mold?

Question
I recently received a new humidor as a gift.  I followed the instructions for "proper use" when I set up my humidor.  I have recently discovered that there is a white fluffy substance growing on my humidifier.  I do not have a sponge in my humidifier, I believe it is an acryl polymer humidifier.  I have read some other questions similar to mine, but I cannot get to the growing substance to see if it is the consistency of flour or corn starch.  But, it is a white or gray color and is contained within the humidifier.  Is this a problem?  Am I using the wrong type of distilled water?  Or is this the normal function and I am just blowing things out of proportion?  Any help would be appreciated.  Thank you,

Bruce

Answer
Hi Bruce,

If the substance is contained within (or growing on) the humidifier, then it is most likely mold caused by either high humidity, the use of contaminated water, or water that is not 100% distilled (such as boiled, tap or bottled drinking water).

First, check your humidor's humidity level.  The ideal range is 67-74% humidity.  If your humidity is 75% or greater, what you should do is switch to a foam-core/sponge humidification unit and use a 50/50 Propylene Glycol and distilled water mixture.  This will balance your humidity out at 70% (the perfect level) which should prevent the white substance from forming.

Polymer-based humidification devices (such as humidor crystals and gels) generally do provide a better humidity level and are less susceptible to bacteria.  If your polymer humidifier uses polymer "crystals", you can try to save your humidifier and thoroughly flush out the mold with distilled water (use LOTS of distilled water).

Also, be sure that you're using 100% distilled water or "bidest" water (which is double-distilled).  Using any other type of water can cause mold and mineral trace to grow which could damage your humidifier.

Hope this answers your question.  If you have any more questions, please feel free to just ask and I'll be happy to help.

Regards,
James

Expertise

My main area of expertise is Cuban cigars but I can also assist you with cigar etiquette, humidor maintenance and troubleshooting. Unsure of a certain cigar brand? Wondering what a certain cigar tastes like? Have any questions about Cuban cigars? Just let me know! I have smoked every brand of Cuban cigars and most reputable non-Cuban cigar brands on a regular basis so I know a fair bit about taste profiles, cigar etiquette and other fine nuances to cigar smoking. (NOTE: My main focus is on premium, hand-rolled cigars and not cheap, machine made, convenience store cigars.) IMPORTANT: PLEASE NOTE THAT I DO NOT PROVIDE CIGAR OR CIGAR-RELATED APPRAISALS. If you have a vintage cigar item and you want to know if it's worth something, please contact an antique dealer that specializes in "TOBACCIANA".

Experience

I currently have 19 dedicated years of cigar smoking and counting. I have smoked every brand of Cuban cigars and most reputable non-Cuban cigar brands on a regular basis so I know a fair bit about taste profiles, cigar etiquette and other fine nuances to cigar smoking. For 5 years, I studied with Cuban torcedores (rollers), catadores (taste testers) and revisadores (inspectors) on every aspect involving the production of the Cuban cigar and I am currently writing a book that will help beginners understand everything they need to know about cigars and cigar smoking.
