Cigars/Seasoned humidor

Question
I bought a humidor at an antique shop, (50)ct, when I seasoned it and left it for a couple of days and then checked it, it smelled like it had been seasoned previously with whiskey. Will this ever come out? I don't want my puros tasting like this.

Answer
Kenneth,
Most humidors are lined with Spanish cedar which is a very porous, aromatic wood. Cedar absorbs smells easily, so if the humidor was seasoned with whiskey or even if it was used to hold flavored cigars the aroma is probably in the wood. You might try lightly sanding the inside which will remove some of the residue and will release some of the cedar aroma. Other than that, I don't know what else you can do. The humidor might continue to have a slight aroma, but unless it is really strong it won't make your cigars taste like whiskey - if anything they might have a very light aroma which you probably wouldn't be able to smell once you light them. Hope this helps.

Expertise

I'm a fourth generation cigar maker and have spent 25+ years operating our factory as well as a mail order cigar company. I belong to cigar manufacturers associations as well as retail cigar associations so I'm usually up to date with current events relating to cigars. I've smoked the majority of brands on the market and would be happy to share my opinions of them with you. Since I live in the U.S. I have very little experience with Cuban cigars, but other than that I know a least a little bit about almost every brand of cigars on the market.

Experience

In addition to growing up in and now managing our cigar factory for 25+ years, I've spent time in many factories in Honduras, Nicaragua, The Dominican Republic and Mexico. BR>
