Question
I was given a Cohiba cigar that looks to be an Esplendido by the measurements. It is in a glass tube with a rubber stop and foam patch at the end. Is this genuine? Also, what is the best way to store it since I do not have a humidor?
Thankyou, Jason

Answer
Hi Jason,

As far as I know, Cuban Cohiba cigars are not packaged in glass tubes so if the cigar has a Cuban Cohiba band (yellow, white & black colours with the words "Habana, Cuba" under the Cohiba name), then it is most likely fake.  Is the glass tube sealed shut?  If not, then it's possible that someone simply had a spare cigar tube and decided to put the cigar inside it.

Some non-Cuban "red dot" Cohiba cigars made in the Dominican Republic do come packaged in glass tubes so if the cigar has a cigar band with a red dot in the middle of the "O" in the word "COHIBA", then you have the non-Cuban version.

To store this cigar, your best option is to purchase a "humi-pouch".  Humi-pouches are Ziploc-style bags with humidified linings built right into the plastic.  They're intended for short-term cigar storage/travel and can keep your cigar(s) properly humidified for 90 days straight.  After 3 months, you will need to replace the bag.  Humi-pouches are available in a variety of sizes and can accomodate everything from a few singles cigars to whole boxes.  Depending on the size, they will cost between $5-$15 a bag and you can buy them at most reputable cigar stores/tobacconists.

Hopes this answers your questions.  If you have any more questions, please feel free to just ask and I'll be happy to help.

Regards,
James

Expertise

My main area of expertise is Cuban cigars but I can also assist you with cigar etiquette, humidor maintenance and troubleshooting. Unsure of a certain cigar brand? Wondering what a certain cigar tastes like? Have any questions about Cuban cigars? Just let me know! I have smoked every brand of Cuban cigars and most reputable non-Cuban cigar brands on a regular basis so I know a fair bit about taste profiles, cigar etiquette and other fine nuances to cigar smoking. (NOTE: My main focus is on premium, hand-rolled cigars and not cheap, machine made, convenience store cigars.) IMPORTANT: PLEASE NOTE THAT I DO NOT PROVIDE CIGAR OR CIGAR-RELATED APPRAISALS. If you have a vintage cigar item and you want to know if it's worth something, please contact an antique dealer that specializes in "TOBACCIANA".

Experience

I currently have 19 dedicated years of cigar smoking and counting. I have smoked every brand of Cuban cigars and most reputable non-Cuban cigar brands on a regular basis so I know a fair bit about taste profiles, cigar etiquette and other fine nuances to cigar smoking. For 5 years, I studied with Cuban torcedores (rollers), catadores (taste testers) and revisadores (inspectors) on every aspect involving the production of the Cuban cigar and I am currently writing a book that will help beginners understand everything they need to know about cigars and cigar smoking.
