Cigars/de-mineralized water

Question
Hi there,
I was told I can put de-mineralized water into a compartment in the box the cigars were in from Cuba.  Where do I get the water, I've tried the local grocery store and pharmacy.  Is it true, the cigars will keep with this in the wood box in the fridge for 2 weeks.

Answer
suefenyves,

When maintaining cigars, it is very important that you only use either 100% distilled water or double-distilled water.  Do not use any other types of water as it could negatively affect your cigars.  Many grocery stores will sell distilled water.  It is also available in stores that sell commercially bottled water or water treatment/filtration products.

Also, do not store your cigars in the refrigerator.  When storing cigars, it is important that you keep them in a humidor.  Storing your cigars in a humidor at 70% humidity and 70 degrees Fahrenheit will properly maintain your cigars and reduce the chance of your cigars getting mold or tobacco beetles.  Storing your cigars in your refrigerator (or freezer) is not recommended because prolonged exposure to cold air/temperatures will negatively affect the way your cigars smell and taste.

If you do not have a humidor yet, you can then store your cigars in "humi-pouches".  Humi-pouches are plastic "Ziploc-style" bags with humidified linings built into the bag.  They are designed for short-term cigar storage and cigar travel and will last for 3 months/90 days after you first open the bag.  After 3 months, you will need to replace the bag(s).  These bags are available in a variety of sizes and can fit everything from a few single cigars to whole boxes.  You can purchase humi-pouches at most cigar stores/tobacconists.

Hopes this answers your question.  If you have any more questions, please feel free to just ask.

Regards,
James

Expertise

My main area of expertise is Cuban cigars but I can also assist you with cigar etiquette, humidor maintenance and troubleshooting. Unsure of a certain cigar brand? Wondering what a certain cigar tastes like? Have any questions about Cuban cigars? Just let me know! I have smoked every brand of Cuban cigars and most reputable non-Cuban cigar brands on a regular basis so I know a fair bit about taste profiles, cigar etiquette and other fine nuances to cigar smoking. (NOTE: My main focus is on premium, hand-rolled cigars and not cheap, machine made, convenience store cigars.) IMPORTANT: PLEASE NOTE THAT I DO NOT PROVIDE CIGAR OR CIGAR-RELATED APPRAISALS. If you have a vintage cigar item and you want to know if it's worth something, please contact an antique dealer that specializes in "TOBACCIANA".

Experience

I currently have 19 dedicated years of cigar smoking and counting. I have smoked every brand of Cuban cigars and most reputable non-Cuban cigar brands on a regular basis so I know a fair bit about taste profiles, cigar etiquette and other fine nuances to cigar smoking. For 5 years, I studied with Cuban torcedores (rollers), catadores (taste testers) and revisadores (inspectors) on every aspect involving the production of the Cuban cigar and I am currently writing a book that will help beginners understand everything they need to know about cigars and cigar smoking.
