Question
i just got my first humidor and i was wondering how often you have to season it. i was also wondering how often you put the elixir into the humidifier

Answer
Hi Joe,

Normally, you only need to season your humidor just once but if your humidor eventally becomes bone dry from long periods of inactivity, then you will need to re-season your humidor again.

As for the elixir (I assume you're referring to the pre-mixed humidor solution), you only need to add it once.  These humidor mixtures contain a liquid called Propylene Glycol (PG) which regulates the humidity perfectly at 70%.  PG can last a long time inside a humidor (on average 2 years) so you only need to add it just once.  After that, just add distilled water to the humidification device when needed.

If you wish to create your own humidor mixture, simply add 1 part Propylene Glycol to 1 part distilled water and pour into your humidification device.  Propylene Glycol can be purchased at most cigar shops/tobacconists as well as pharmacies and drug stores.

Also, keep in mind that these mixtures are extremely effective but may take up to a week to stabilize in your humidor.  As a result, your humidity level inside your humidor may dip and peak wildly after adding the dosage but don't worry, it will stabilize.

Hopes this answers your question.  If you have any more questions, please feel free to just ask and I'll be happy to help.

Regards,
James

Expertise

My main area of expertise is Cuban cigars but I can also assist you with cigar etiquette, humidor maintenance and troubleshooting. Unsure of a certain cigar brand? Wondering what a certain cigar tastes like? Have any questions about Cuban cigars? Just let me know! I have smoked every brand of Cuban cigars and most reputable non-Cuban cigar brands on a regular basis so I know a fair bit about taste profiles, cigar etiquette and other fine nuances to cigar smoking. (NOTE: My main focus is on premium, hand-rolled cigars and not cheap, machine made, convenience store cigars.) IMPORTANT: PLEASE NOTE THAT I DO NOT PROVIDE CIGAR OR CIGAR-RELATED APPRAISALS. If you have a vintage cigar item and you want to know if it's worth something, please contact an antique dealer that specializes in "TOBACCIANA".

Experience

I currently have 19 dedicated years of cigar smoking and counting. I have smoked every brand of Cuban cigars and most reputable non-Cuban cigar brands on a regular basis so I know a fair bit about taste profiles, cigar etiquette and other fine nuances to cigar smoking. For 5 years, I studied with Cuban torcedores (rollers), catadores (taste testers) and revisadores (inspectors) on every aspect involving the production of the Cuban cigar and I am currently writing a book that will help beginners understand everything they need to know about cigars and cigar smoking.
