Question
I just came back from the partagas factory in havana and they gave me 2 free cigars after buying some. they didn't tell me what they were, no name on them. they are 4 7/8 x 50. i'm thinking robusto, either cohiba or partagas series d #4. Am i in the right ballpark or to hard to tell. thank you --bill rookie cigar guy

Answer
Hi Bill,

Your mystery cigars are most definitely Robusto-sized but without any cigar bands, it's hard to tell what brand they are.  It could be one of the following, which are regular production, Cuban robustos:

Partagas Serie D No. 4
Hoyo de Monterrey No. 2
Juan Lopez Seleccion No. 2
Cohiba Robusto
Ramon Allones Specially Selected
Bolivar Royal Coronas

(*Brands such as Vegas Robaina, Romeo y Julieta, Saint Luis Rey, El Rey du Mundo and H. Upmann do produce Robusto-esque cigars but they are not robusto.  They are "Hermoso" cigars which are 4 7/8 x 48.)

If the robustos were freshly rolled for you on the spot, then they are generic "house" cigars made by the rollers strictly for customers at the factory.  While these freshly rolled cigars are indeed long-filler, premium cigars, they really don't belong to any specific Cuban brand as they use a basic filler tobacco recipe.  (Premium Cuban brands would use a more elaborate filler tobacco recipe to create the distinct flavour recognizable for that respective brand.)

Hope this answers your question.  If you have any more questions, please feel free to just ask and I will be happy to help.

Regards,
James

Expertise

My main area of expertise is Cuban cigars but I can also assist you with cigar etiquette, humidor maintenance and troubleshooting. Unsure of a certain cigar brand? Wondering what a certain cigar tastes like? Have any questions about Cuban cigars? Just let me know! I have smoked every brand of Cuban cigars and most reputable non-Cuban cigar brands on a regular basis so I know a fair bit about taste profiles, cigar etiquette and other fine nuances to cigar smoking. (NOTE: My main focus is on premium, hand-rolled cigars and not cheap, machine made, convenience store cigars.) IMPORTANT: PLEASE NOTE THAT I DO NOT PROVIDE CIGAR OR CIGAR-RELATED APPRAISALS. If you have a vintage cigar item and you want to know if it's worth something, please contact an antique dealer that specializes in "TOBACCIANA".

Experience

I currently have 19 dedicated years of cigar smoking and counting. I have smoked every brand of Cuban cigars and most reputable non-Cuban cigar brands on a regular basis so I know a fair bit about taste profiles, cigar etiquette and other fine nuances to cigar smoking. For 5 years, I studied with Cuban torcedores (rollers), catadores (taste testers) and revisadores (inspectors) on every aspect involving the production of the Cuban cigar and I am currently writing a book that will help beginners understand everything they need to know about cigars and cigar smoking.
