Answer
Hi amr a. seoud,

Some cigars can slightly (VERY slightly) change colours when they are aged but their wrapper shade will not significantly change to a darker shade during aging.  The darkness of the tobacco leaves is determined by the amount of time the tobacco is spent growing in the tobacco fields as well as Stage 1 fermentation after it has been picked by the farmers.  The longer tobacco leaves are left to sun-grow on a tobacco plant, the darker they become.  Maduro and Oscuro tobacco leaves for example, are left on a tobacco plant longer than Candela and Claro-shade leaves.  (Oscuro leaves are the darkest and picked last.  Candela leaves are still green because they're picked first.)  In the first stage of fermentation, the tobacco is cured for a certain amount of time so that the tobacco's impurities are purged and the tobacco colour is naturally evened out.  Once the tobacco is sent to the cigar factories for production, the colour of the tobacco is already set and will not change shades during aging.

It's also not uncommon for identical cigars (ie: your Robaina Unicos) from the same year but different boxes to be different colours.

Regards,
James

Expertise

My main area of expertise is Cuban cigars but I can also assist you with cigar etiquette, humidor maintenance and troubleshooting. Unsure of a certain cigar brand? Wondering what a certain cigar tastes like? Have any questions about Cuban cigars? Just let me know! I have smoked every brand of Cuban cigars and most reputable non-Cuban cigar brands on a regular basis so I know a fair bit about taste profiles, cigar etiquette and other fine nuances to cigar smoking. (NOTE: My main focus is on premium, hand-rolled cigars and not cheap, machine made, convenience store cigars.) IMPORTANT: PLEASE NOTE THAT I DO NOT PROVIDE CIGAR OR CIGAR-RELATED APPRAISALS. If you have a vintage cigar item and you want to know if it's worth something, please contact an antique dealer that specializes in "TOBACCIANA".

Experience

I currently have 19 dedicated years of cigar smoking and counting. I have smoked every brand of Cuban cigars and most reputable non-Cuban cigar brands on a regular basis so I know a fair bit about taste profiles, cigar etiquette and other fine nuances to cigar smoking. For 5 years, I studied with Cuban torcedores (rollers), catadores (taste testers) and revisadores (inspectors) on every aspect involving the production of the Cuban cigar and I am currently writing a book that will help beginners understand everything they need to know about cigars and cigar smoking.
