Cigars/Humidor Tempreture

Question
Hi James,

We all heard that the humidity needs to be ideally 70% mark, however i read a lot about the tempreture needs to be around 70F, the humidor comes with a analog hgrometer.

From what i can see this only reads the humidity level, not the tempreture. Is this factured in?, as i see other analog meters with the same content.
Do you propose in purchasing a digital meter which reads the humidity and tempreture?

Regards and Thanks.
Patrick.

Answer
Hi Patrick,

Yes, humidors should have an internal temperature of 70 degrees Fahrenheit (hence the easy-to-remember formula of "70/70"; 70% humidity, 70 degrees F.) but the analog hygrometers that come with most humidors do not measure temperature.  As a result, you will have to measure the temperature yourself with your own thermometer or a digital hygrometer that measures both humidity and temperature.  Digital hygrometers are indeed a better choice because they require little or no calibration, are extremely accurate and has many functions when compared to the basic analog hygrometers.  Depending on the brand, size and functions, a good digital hygrometer can cost anywhere between $15 to $100+.

Hope this answers your question. If you have any more questions, please feel free to just ask and I'll be happy to help.

Regards,
James

Expertise

My main area of expertise is Cuban cigars but I can also assist you with cigar etiquette, humidor maintenance and troubleshooting. Unsure of a certain cigar brand? Wondering what a certain cigar tastes like? Have any questions about Cuban cigars? Just let me know! I have smoked every brand of Cuban cigars and most reputable non-Cuban cigar brands on a regular basis so I know a fair bit about taste profiles, cigar etiquette and other fine nuances to cigar smoking. (NOTE: My main focus is on premium, hand-rolled cigars and not cheap, machine made, convenience store cigars.) IMPORTANT: PLEASE NOTE THAT I DO NOT PROVIDE CIGAR OR CIGAR-RELATED APPRAISALS. If you have a vintage cigar item and you want to know if it's worth something, please contact an antique dealer that specializes in "TOBACCIANA".

Experience

I currently have 19 dedicated years of cigar smoking and counting. I have smoked every brand of Cuban cigars and most reputable non-Cuban cigar brands on a regular basis so I know a fair bit about taste profiles, cigar etiquette and other fine nuances to cigar smoking. For 5 years, I studied with Cuban torcedores (rollers), catadores (taste testers) and revisadores (inspectors) on every aspect involving the production of the Cuban cigar and I am currently writing a book that will help beginners understand everything they need to know about cigars and cigar smoking.
