Question
hi james, I'm on my way to building a walk in humidor in my store. Is there any other type of wood, inplace of spanish cedar, i could use for the walls to save money. Any other type of wood panels? Should i use wood panels over the dry wall?  Do i have to lay down ceramic tiles or could i just leave it the way it is, concrete, or should i lay down wood? so many choices I'm lost help

Answer
Hi Jimmy,

Spanish cedar is recommended because it can properly absorb and regulate humidity, deter bugs and has a subtle aroma that compliments your cigars.  Other types of cedar can be extremely pungent and may ruin your cigars.  Using other types of woods may also be ineffective at regulating humidity.  I wouldn't suggest any other type of wood as it may jeopardize your cigars.

You can install the cedar panels over your dry wall but you will need to install a large plastic vapor barrier between the walls and the cedar.  This will prevent humidity loss and keep the humidity in the room.  For flooring, ceramic tiles is not necessary but will give your humidor a more stylish look.  Because your floor is concrete, it's fine as is but if you prefer to install wood flooring, you'll need to use a treated hardwood that will not absorb humidity and warp.

For lighting, use either compact fluorescent lighting or LED bulbs as they do not generate too much heat and will not increase the temperature of the room.  Incandescent lighting is a definite no.  Canister/recessed lighting fixtures is usually a popular choice because the light points straight down at the floor and away from the cigars/shelving. If you use track lighting, be sure to point the lights at the walls and corners and away from the cigars/shelves.

Hope this helps. If you have any more questions, please feel free to just ask and I'll be happy to help.

Regards,
James

Expertise

My main area of expertise is Cuban cigars but I can also assist you with cigar etiquette, humidor maintenance and troubleshooting. Unsure of a certain cigar brand? Wondering what a certain cigar tastes like? Have any questions about Cuban cigars? Just let me know! I have smoked every brand of Cuban cigars and most reputable non-Cuban cigar brands on a regular basis so I know a fair bit about taste profiles, cigar etiquette and other fine nuances to cigar smoking. (NOTE: My main focus is on premium, hand-rolled cigars and not cheap, machine made, convenience store cigars.) IMPORTANT: PLEASE NOTE THAT I DO NOT PROVIDE CIGAR OR CIGAR-RELATED APPRAISALS. If you have a vintage cigar item and you want to know if it's worth something, please contact an antique dealer that specializes in "TOBACCIANA".

Experience

I currently have 19 dedicated years of cigar smoking and counting. I have smoked every brand of Cuban cigars and most reputable non-Cuban cigar brands on a regular basis so I know a fair bit about taste profiles, cigar etiquette and other fine nuances to cigar smoking. For 5 years, I studied with Cuban torcedores (rollers), catadores (taste testers) and revisadores (inspectors) on every aspect involving the production of the Cuban cigar and I am currently writing a book that will help beginners understand everything they need to know about cigars and cigar smoking.
