Cigars/P.G. in a Moist-N-Aire

Question
James,

I have been looking for info on whether or not to use a pg mixture with the moist-n-aire to no avail.  You were very helpful (and correct) with some advice breaking in my new humi, so I thought I'd poke you once more.  I have a 6 foot tall cabinet humi and lose a lot of ambient RH when I open the big door.  Sometimes, it seems like the moist-n-aire will over humidify after opening the door, 73%-76%, but if I turn it down the RH falls away too much (60%-62%).  I have added some small jars of beads throughout from heartfelt, but was wondering if the PG might help avoid some of the over humidification.  Also, a friend had suggested some "pearls" that are supposed to maintain 68%-70% by either releasing or absorbing humidity as conditions require.  SO . . . what do feel is best?  In advance - THANK YOU AGAIN!

Answer
Hi Ed,

The humidification pearls work the same way as the Heartfelt beads that you're using.  The heartfelt beads are pretty effective and according to Heartfelt Industries' website, will regulate humidity perfectly, compensate over-humidification and help your humidor recover faster from humidity loss whenever you open it.

I've been told that PG is less than effective and erratic with the moist-n-aire so consider sticking with the heartfelt beads that you're using now.  You may need to increase the amount of beads in order for it to be effective in your humidor.  (I believe 1lb. of beads will properly regulate 5 cubic feet of humidor space so calculate the exact size of your humidor and determine exactly how much you'll need.)

If you prefer to stick with the moist-n-aire, lower the humidity by turning it down (so that it's around 60-62%) and then use the beads and additional distilled water to increase the humidity until it reaches and holds at 70%.  It may take some time figuring out the right amount of beads you'll need so be patient.

Regards,
James

Expertise

My main area of expertise is Cuban cigars but I can also assist you with cigar etiquette, humidor maintenance and troubleshooting. Unsure of a certain cigar brand? Wondering what a certain cigar tastes like? Have any questions about Cuban cigars? Just let me know! I have smoked every brand of Cuban cigars and most reputable non-Cuban cigar brands on a regular basis so I know a fair bit about taste profiles, cigar etiquette and other fine nuances to cigar smoking. (NOTE: My main focus is on premium, hand-rolled cigars and not cheap, machine made, convenience store cigars.) IMPORTANT: PLEASE NOTE THAT I DO NOT PROVIDE CIGAR OR CIGAR-RELATED APPRAISALS. If you have a vintage cigar item and you want to know if it's worth something, please contact an antique dealer that specializes in "TOBACCIANA".

Experience

I currently have 19 dedicated years of cigar smoking and counting. I have smoked every brand of Cuban cigars and most reputable non-Cuban cigar brands on a regular basis so I know a fair bit about taste profiles, cigar etiquette and other fine nuances to cigar smoking. For 5 years, I studied with Cuban torcedores (rollers), catadores (taste testers) and revisadores (inspectors) on every aspect involving the production of the Cuban cigar and I am currently writing a book that will help beginners understand everything they need to know about cigars and cigar smoking.
