Question
Dear James
i have a big humidor that i built using spanish cedar wood interior and the drawers are made of spanish cedar as well with a maintaed temp of 17 deg celcius and 70% humidity

each drawer has about 10-15 cm free space around it should i leave the cigars in the original boxes in this humidor or put them in the drawer for better ventlation ?

Answer
Hi Amr A Seoud,

Whether or not to keep the cigars in their original boxes is purely personal preference.  Cigar boxes are not 100% airtight (neither are plastic cellophane wrappers and metal cigar tubes) so if your humidor definitely has enough storage space, I would personally recommend that you keep the cigars in their boxes.  In a proper humidor environment, your cigars can be kept in their original boxes and still be properly humidified.  Also, the cigar boxes provide an extra bit of protection for your cigars against unforseen dangers such as cigar mold and tobacco beetles.  By keeping your cigars in their boxes, you have an extra layer of protection for your cigars.

If you feel that your humidor would appear more presentable and stylish by having the cigars out of their boxes, that's perfectly fine as well.

Hope this answers your question. As always, if you have any more questions, please feel free to just ask and I will be happy to help.

Regards,
James

Expertise

My main area of expertise is Cuban cigars but I can also assist you with cigar etiquette, humidor maintenance and troubleshooting. Unsure of a certain cigar brand? Wondering what a certain cigar tastes like? Have any questions about Cuban cigars? Just let me know! I have smoked every brand of Cuban cigars and most reputable non-Cuban cigar brands on a regular basis so I know a fair bit about taste profiles, cigar etiquette and other fine nuances to cigar smoking. (NOTE: My main focus is on premium, hand-rolled cigars and not cheap, machine made, convenience store cigars.) IMPORTANT: PLEASE NOTE THAT I DO NOT PROVIDE CIGAR OR CIGAR-RELATED APPRAISALS. If you have a vintage cigar item and you want to know if it's worth something, please contact an antique dealer that specializes in "TOBACCIANA".

Experience

I currently have 19 dedicated years of cigar smoking and counting. I have smoked every brand of Cuban cigars and most reputable non-Cuban cigar brands on a regular basis so I know a fair bit about taste profiles, cigar etiquette and other fine nuances to cigar smoking. For 5 years, I studied with Cuban torcedores (rollers), catadores (taste testers) and revisadores (inspectors) on every aspect involving the production of the Cuban cigar and I am currently writing a book that will help beginners understand everything they need to know about cigars and cigar smoking.
