Question
QUESTION: i did the method but the results were so off that when i turn the screw it just springs back and wont actually stick in the position i want. what should i do?

Thanks again, Charles

ANSWER: Hi Charles,

Hygrometer designs varies by manufacturer so you will have to contact the manufacturer and check with them on how to adjust the needle on the hygrometer.  For most analog hygrometers, the calibration screw/knob does not spring back when turned so check to make sure that is the right screw that you're adjusting.  Try turning it a tiny bit or turn it the other way and see if that works.  (If it turns clockwise and springs back, try turning it counter-clockwise.)

As an alternative, you should consider investing in a digital hygrometer.  Digital hygrometers are usually factory-preset, extremely accurate and requires little or no calibration at all.

QUESTION: Its like a screw in the middle, then a thin peice of coiled up wire is around it and the end of the wire is attacted to a peice of metal (holding it to the back of the instrument), when i twist the screw in the center, it tightens the coil changing the hand on the front of the instrument. The problem is the coil springs back into place because the screw doesnt hold, i think it may be a manufacturing error, what is your oppinion?

Thanks, Charles.

Answer
Charles,

Try turning the screw counter-clockwise.  Also try pressing the screw inwards as you turn.  The spring may be a safety mechanism to prevent tampering or accidental adjustments.  If that doesn't work, contact the manufacturer of that hygrometer or the store that you purchased the hygrometer from and they may be able to provide more proper instructions.

James

Expertise

My main area of expertise is Cuban cigars but I can also assist you with cigar etiquette, humidor maintenance and troubleshooting. Unsure of a certain cigar brand? Wondering what a certain cigar tastes like? Have any questions about Cuban cigars? Just let me know! I have smoked every brand of Cuban cigars and most reputable non-Cuban cigar brands on a regular basis so I know a fair bit about taste profiles, cigar etiquette and other fine nuances to cigar smoking. (NOTE: My main focus is on premium, hand-rolled cigars and not cheap, machine made, convenience store cigars.) IMPORTANT: PLEASE NOTE THAT I DO NOT PROVIDE CIGAR OR CIGAR-RELATED APPRAISALS. If you have a vintage cigar item and you want to know if it's worth something, please contact an antique dealer that specializes in "TOBACCIANA".

Experience

I currently have 19 dedicated years of cigar smoking and counting. I have smoked every brand of Cuban cigars and most reputable non-Cuban cigar brands on a regular basis so I know a fair bit about taste profiles, cigar etiquette and other fine nuances to cigar smoking. For 5 years, I studied with Cuban torcedores (rollers), catadores (taste testers) and revisadores (inspectors) on every aspect involving the production of the Cuban cigar and I am currently writing a book that will help beginners understand everything they need to know about cigars and cigar smoking.
