Question
I was wondering if it would be possible to make a "humidor" or at least supplemental storage for flavored cigars out of a old wooden cigar box that has a credo about the size of 50 cent piece? Also what brand would make a good low cost mild bodied turn to cigar?

Answer
Hi Michael,

Varnished cigar boxes with a heavy lid can make good temporary humidors.  Cuban cigar cabinet SLBs (slide lid boxes) also work great.  Again, as an inexpensive alternative, you can also store your flavoured cigars in a clean tupperware container (lined with Spanish cedar and fitted with a credo) or store them in a humi-pouch which are designed for short-term (3 months) cigar storage and travel.  Of the two, the latter requires less maitenance, are more reliable and much easier to use.  You will need to replace humi-pouches every 3 months but they're fairly inexpensive.  Depending on the size, you can find them at most cigar stores between $5-$15 per bag.

As for cigars, if you're looking for low-cost Cuban cigars, you should try Guantanamera, Jose Piedras and Quinteros.  You can find these brands at most Cuban cigar stores usually for less than $5 a cigar.  For non-Cubans, Padron 2000/3000, Arturo Fuente Curly Heads, some lines of Perdomo and Hoyo de Monterrey Excalibur are fairly inexpensive and make excellent "everyday" cigars.

Hopes this answers your questions.  If you have any more questions, feel free to just ask.

Regards,
James

Expertise

My main area of expertise is Cuban cigars but I can also assist you with cigar etiquette, humidor maintenance and troubleshooting. Unsure of a certain cigar brand? Wondering what a certain cigar tastes like? Have any questions about Cuban cigars? Just let me know! I have smoked every brand of Cuban cigars and most reputable non-Cuban cigar brands on a regular basis so I know a fair bit about taste profiles, cigar etiquette and other fine nuances to cigar smoking. (NOTE: My main focus is on premium, hand-rolled cigars and not cheap, machine made, convenience store cigars.) IMPORTANT: PLEASE NOTE THAT I DO NOT PROVIDE CIGAR OR CIGAR-RELATED APPRAISALS. If you have a vintage cigar item and you want to know if it's worth something, please contact an antique dealer that specializes in "TOBACCIANA".

Experience

I currently have 19 dedicated years of cigar smoking and counting. I have smoked every brand of Cuban cigars and most reputable non-Cuban cigar brands on a regular basis so I know a fair bit about taste profiles, cigar etiquette and other fine nuances to cigar smoking. For 5 years, I studied with Cuban torcedores (rollers), catadores (taste testers) and revisadores (inspectors) on every aspect involving the production of the Cuban cigar and I am currently writing a book that will help beginners understand everything they need to know about cigars and cigar smoking.
