Question
Hello mate
I need a travel humidor very quickly and mite not have enough time to order one! So i was thinkung if its possible to use an empty cigar box with a small humidifier inside but i'm just worried about it not being air-tight enough and i need it to last a week! I just rememberd i have a partagas D4 box which has a clip and i think a better sill?
Do you think using this idea this will work?
Thanks for your help

Answer
Hi Mario,

If you have a varnished cigar box with a heavy lid, it can definitely be used as a travel humidor.  If you only need to keep your cigars humidified for a week, a Partagas D4 box will work.  As a cheaper alternative, you can also make your own travel humidor using a brand new (and clean) Tupperware food container.  Simply line the container with Spanish cedar wood and add a humidification device and hygrometer.

As an even better alternative, what you can do is keep your cigars in a "humi-pouch".  Humi-pouches are thick Ziploc-style bags with humidified linings built into the plastic.  These bags are intended for short term cigar storage and travel and can keep your cigars properly humidified for up to 3 months (90 days).  After 3 months, you will need to replace the bag.  Humi-pouches are available in a variety of sizes and can accomodate everything from a few single cigars to whole boxes.  They're available at most cigar stores and depending on the size, can cost anywhere between $5-$15 per bag.

Hope this answers your question.  If you have any more questions, please feel free to just ask and I will be happy to help.

Regards,
James

Expertise

My main area of expertise is Cuban cigars but I can also assist you with cigar etiquette, humidor maintenance and troubleshooting. Unsure of a certain cigar brand? Wondering what a certain cigar tastes like? Have any questions about Cuban cigars? Just let me know! I have smoked every brand of Cuban cigars and most reputable non-Cuban cigar brands on a regular basis so I know a fair bit about taste profiles, cigar etiquette and other fine nuances to cigar smoking. (NOTE: My main focus is on premium, hand-rolled cigars and not cheap, machine made, convenience store cigars.) IMPORTANT: PLEASE NOTE THAT I DO NOT PROVIDE CIGAR OR CIGAR-RELATED APPRAISALS. If you have a vintage cigar item and you want to know if it's worth something, please contact an antique dealer that specializes in "TOBACCIANA".

Experience

I currently have 19 dedicated years of cigar smoking and counting. I have smoked every brand of Cuban cigars and most reputable non-Cuban cigar brands on a regular basis so I know a fair bit about taste profiles, cigar etiquette and other fine nuances to cigar smoking. For 5 years, I studied with Cuban torcedores (rollers), catadores (taste testers) and revisadores (inspectors) on every aspect involving the production of the Cuban cigar and I am currently writing a book that will help beginners understand everything they need to know about cigars and cigar smoking.
