Cigars/High Humidor Temperature

Question
Hi James,
I have been trying to season my humidor for more than a week now. The humidity has come to 74% while the temperature is still fluctuation between 74 and 81. What do I have to do to reduce the temperature? Mine is a small 25 cigar humidor and I am using a puck credo in it.
Thanks,
Jack

Answer
Hi Jack,

To lower the temperature in your humidor, try moving your humidor to the coolest room in your home.  Avoid keeping your humidor near windows or major light sources such as direct sunlight, incandescent or halogen lamps.  Also avoid keeping your humidor near major appliciances that emit heat such as a television or computer.  Many people find it useful to relocate there humidors to their basement or wine cellar during hot summer months so if you live in a home with a basement, consider temporarily relocating your humidor there.

If you live in an apartment, you may want to consider keeping your humidor in a room with an air conditioner or fan to keep it cool.

Also, your humidor's humidity is a bit high so monitor your humidor closely.  The humidity safe range for your cigars is between 66%-74% humidity (70% is considered ideal) so if your humidity remains too high, consider using a 50/50 propylene glycol/distilled water mixture in your humidor.  This will lower the humidity to exactly 70%.  You only need to use this mixture just once (on average, it last a couple of years in your humidor) and afterwards, just recharge your humidification device with distilled water when needed.

Hopes this answers your question. If you have any more questions, feel free to just ask.

Regards,
James

Expertise

My main area of expertise is Cuban cigars but I can also assist you with cigar etiquette, humidor maintenance and troubleshooting. Unsure of a certain cigar brand? Wondering what a certain cigar tastes like? Have any questions about Cuban cigars? Just let me know! I have smoked every brand of Cuban cigars and most reputable non-Cuban cigar brands on a regular basis so I know a fair bit about taste profiles, cigar etiquette and other fine nuances to cigar smoking. (NOTE: My main focus is on premium, hand-rolled cigars and not cheap, machine made, convenience store cigars.) IMPORTANT: PLEASE NOTE THAT I DO NOT PROVIDE CIGAR OR CIGAR-RELATED APPRAISALS. If you have a vintage cigar item and you want to know if it's worth something, please contact an antique dealer that specializes in "TOBACCIANA".

Experience

I currently have 19 dedicated years of cigar smoking and counting. I have smoked every brand of Cuban cigars and most reputable non-Cuban cigar brands on a regular basis so I know a fair bit about taste profiles, cigar etiquette and other fine nuances to cigar smoking. For 5 years, I studied with Cuban torcedores (rollers), catadores (taste testers) and revisadores (inspectors) on every aspect involving the production of the Cuban cigar and I am currently writing a book that will help beginners understand everything they need to know about cigars and cigar smoking.
