Cigars/Bundle Cigars and Aging

Question

Hello.

I am new to cigar culture, but off to a good start with a humidor, it’s well seasoned with an Oasis device.  My question is about bundled cigars a person can purchase at an online or mega store.

Recently I bought some JR alternatives.  I have the original cigar as well as the alternative, but the alternatives are very bitter and rough but have potential to become a good smoke.  Would keeping them in a well conditioned humidor over time improve the cigar?  Does this go for all bundled cigars I can get for $40?

Ohh, one more thing.  The branded cigars come in cellophane wrappers.  Would it be recommended to keep the cellophane on?  I read somewhere to take off tubes and wrappers off when storing them in a humidor.

Thank you.

Answer
Edward,

In general, aging cigars for several months can improve the taste, especially if the tobacco use to make them was not 100% cured. However, don't expect a dramatic change in taste from where they are now. Remember that what you bought is an "alternative" - not the same cigar in a bundle.

There are great quality cigars packed in bundles, so don't assume that just because a cigar is packed that way or is "under $40" it won't be good. It's just a matter of finding them.

As far as leaving the cello tubes on the cigars inside your humidor, I prefer to leave them on as they help protect the cigar from damage. They will stay just as well humidified inside the tubes as if you took them out.

Let me know if you have other questions.

Expertise

I'm a fourth generation cigar maker and have spent 25+ years operating our factory as well as a mail order cigar company. I belong to cigar manufacturers associations as well as retail cigar associations so I'm usually up to date with current events relating to cigars. I've smoked the majority of brands on the market and would be happy to share my opinions of them with you. Since I live in the U.S. I have very little experience with Cuban cigars, but other than that I know a least a little bit about almost every brand of cigars on the market.

In addition to growing up in and now managing our cigar factory for 25+ years, I've spent time in many factories in Honduras, Nicaragua, The Dominican Republic and Mexico. BR>
