Cigars/Humi Gel bead and PG

Question
Hey I just got some of that new gel-bead-stuff for my humidor.  It came unhydrated as small granules; I addded distilled water to it and after the beads had expanded i scooped them into my credo after having removed the green foam.  Now my humidity shot to 80%!  My question is do you need PG for the beads?  I read the instructions on the beads and it said just to add the water but I'm thinking that was wrong?  80%!  They have not swollen but they are feeling like too squishy.  My airconditioning is set at 70 constantly so they dont get too hot.  Suggestions?

Answer
Hi Brian,

Some of these cellulose polymer/gel-based humidifiers (ie: pillows, beads, gel, etc.) do not require PG but some brands also insist that you do.  Check with manufacturer's website or email them to double check if their product requires PG.

Also, after adding water, these humidifiers usually require some time for the humidity to stabilize.  Like PG, it can take anywhere between a few hours to a week to stabilize so be patient.  Usually after water, the humidity will dip and peak wildly but this is only temporary until the gel/beads settle.  Also, if you've added too much water, draining the excess should help.

Regards,
James

Expertise

My main area of expertise is Cuban cigars but I can also assist you with cigar etiquette, humidor maintenance and troubleshooting. Unsure of a certain cigar brand? Wondering what a certain cigar tastes like? Have any questions about Cuban cigars? Just let me know! I have smoked every brand of Cuban cigars and most reputable non-Cuban cigar brands on a regular basis so I know a fair bit about taste profiles, cigar etiquette and other fine nuances to cigar smoking. (NOTE: My main focus is on premium, hand-rolled cigars and not cheap, machine made, convenience store cigars.) IMPORTANT: PLEASE NOTE THAT I DO NOT PROVIDE CIGAR OR CIGAR-RELATED APPRAISALS. If you have a vintage cigar item and you want to know if it's worth something, please contact an antique dealer that specializes in "TOBACCIANA".

Experience

I currently have 19 dedicated years of cigar smoking and counting. I have smoked every brand of Cuban cigars and most reputable non-Cuban cigar brands on a regular basis so I know a fair bit about taste profiles, cigar etiquette and other fine nuances to cigar smoking. For 5 years, I studied with Cuban torcedores (rollers), catadores (taste testers) and revisadores (inspectors) on every aspect involving the production of the Cuban cigar and I am currently writing a book that will help beginners understand everything they need to know about cigars and cigar smoking.
