Question
I just got a humidor as a gift, and it came already set up and prepared.

I also received "QuickStart Humidification Fluid 50/50" and "Xikar Crystal 50 Cigar Humidifier".

My first question is, do I use the 50/50 fluid on the sponge every few weeks? Or only use it in special cases, and normally use distilled water.

My second question is, for Xikars humidifier, is it ok to use the 50/50 solution, or am I looking for a 100% solution of propylene glycol, since the instructions state to use "our Propylene Glycol Solution", and also states "do not use 50/50 solution."

Answer
Kevin,

I have never used the quick start 50/50, but I believe it is only for setting up a new humidor, and should only be used the first time you prep the humidor. Typical PG solution is much less than 50%/50% - if you use that much propylene glycol all the time your humidifier will not put out enough moisture and you run the risk of creating mold.

You should use Madeline or Xikar brand solution (the only 2 I am very familiar with) on a regular basis. Fill up the humidifier whenever you see your hygrometer starting to show a decrease in relative humidity - usually about once a month depending on how big the humidor is, how many cigars you have in it and how often you open it. You can use plain distilled water, but I have found that the PG solution works better.

Let me know if you have other questions.

Expertise

I'm a fourth generation cigar maker and have spent 25+ years operating our factory as well as a mail order cigar company. I belong to cigar manufacturers associations as well as retail cigar associations so I'm usually up to date with current events relating to cigars. I've smoked the majority of brands on the market and would be happy to share my opinions of them with you. Since I live in the U.S. I have very little experience with Cuban cigars, but other than that I know a least a little bit about almost every brand of cigars on the market.

Experience

In addition to growing up in and now managing our cigar factory for 25+ years, I've spent time in many factories in Honduras, Nicaragua, The Dominican Republic and Mexico. BR>
