About James Yee
Expertise
My main area of expertise is Cuban cigars but I can also assist you with cigar etiquette, humidor maintenance and troubleshooting. Unsure of a certain cigar brand? Wondering what a certain cigar tastes like? Have any questions about Cuban cigars? Just let me know! I have smoked every brand of Cuban cigars and most reputable non-Cuban cigar brands on a regular basis so I know a fair bit about taste profiles, cigar etiquette and other fine nuances to cigar smoking. (NOTE: My main focus is on premium, hand-rolled cigars and not cheap, machine made, convenience store cigars.) IMPORTANT: PLEASE NOTE THAT I DO NOT PROVIDE CIGAR OR CIGAR-RELATED APPRAISALS. If you have a vintage cigar item and you want to know if it's worth something, please contact an antique dealer that specializes in "TOBACCIANA".

Experience
I currently have 15 dedicated years of cigar smoking (an average 4 cigars a day) and counting. I have smoked every brand of Cuban cigars and most reputable non-Cuban cigar brands on a regular basis so I know a fair bit about taste profiles, cigar etiquette and other fine nuances to cigar smoking. For 5 years, I studied with Cuban torcedores (rollers), catadores (taste testers) and revisadores (inspectors) on every aspect involving the production of the Cuban cigar and I am currently writing a book that will help beginners understand everything they need to know about cigars and cigar smoking.

Cigars - Yellowish film on Adorini humidifier unit

Expert: James Yee - 10/31/2009

Question
I recently bought an Adorini Torino Deluxe Humidor. I followed all the humidor preparation and humidifier set up instructions correctly. The humidifier uses the Acryl Polymer crystal fleece system and only the Adorini supplied Distilled water need to be used to charge the fleece.
The initial humidity levels were high (reading around 85°), I thought the problem might lay with the hygrometer and recalibrated it several times using the salt method. The humidor humidity has now dropped a bit and is currently hovering on 75°. However, I have noticed a that a yellowish, film like substance has appeared on the sliding shutter (the shutter was on fully closed position due to the high humidity reading, but for the moment and as a precautionary measure I have removed it). Is this normal and is there anything I can do to clean it off, or do I need to buy a whole new unit?

Answer
Hi Arthur,

I believe this yellow residue is caused by the shutter originally being closed and that you are using the humidifier element for the very first time.  What you should do is remove the yellow residue by first rinsing the housing under warm water and then wiping the substance off with a paper towel moistened with distilled water.  Some acryl/cellulose polymer-based humidifiers have been known to discharge a yellow or brown residue on the humidifier housing the first time it is used.  If this yellow residue re-appears, wipe it away again.  It may re-appear a few times before it fully disappears.  If this continues to be a re-occuring problem, it may be best to replace your humidifier (including the crystal fleece).

Hopes this helps.  If you have any more questions, please feel free to just ask and I will be happy to help.

Regards,
James
