Cigars - mini fridge to a humidor
Expert: M J Robbins - 10/30/2009
Question why im asking this question is because i want to know how you can make a humidor from a mini fridge. and if you can make a humidor from a mini fridge give me step by step on how to make it in to one thanks.
Answer I assume this is a new fridge, if it is not you must clean it out with rubbing alcohol to kill the germs and smells. You have to take the fridge apart and clean the coils that blow cold air as they will have picked up the smells of food and will impart them to the cigars. Then leave it open for a few days to air out. Although if you stick enough Spanish cedar in, it will probably overwhelm all odors.
1. Make sure you can get 65 degrees in the fridge as most fridges are not set for this.
If it is not set you will need a refrigerator repair man to come and reset the refrigeration so it can obtain 65 degrees if you do this tell the repair man you want the split to be 10 degrees. -In at 68 degrees out at 58 degrees-.
Lets assume you will be able to set it at 65 degrees and monitor it with a digital hygrometer.
2. Line the fridgeador with Spanish cedar or at least use it for the shelving.
3. Get a small electric humidifier like Oasis and keep the temperature at 65 degrees and the humidity at 73%. Refill the humidifier with distilled water as you do not need to reorder water from Oasis.
4. Put closed boxes in the refrigerator to keep them best and retain the original flavors. Or mix cigars but leave them in the cigar boxes and that is better than leaving them open on a shelve.
Good luck
Mike
